Is what it says on the tin, essential purchase for any level of bassist.
If you don't own this book what are you really doing with yourself as a bassist? Pick it up, everything you could want to really learn is covered and dissected in this book, definitely something I'd regard as the bread and butter of any bassists arsenal.

The Improvisers bass method
Even though I am a relative newcomer to playing bass I can see how this tutorial pulls you out of the usual learning rut! Really quite difficult for a beginner but has the feel of being an extremely useful and interesting tutorial.

Learn to play bass properly
I've been playing bass guitar for a few years and my technique is fine. I also know a bit about scales and modes but it was all a bit mysterious how it fit together. This book is aimed at both upright bass and bass guitar players and explains a lot of music theory in plain language and from a bass players perspective. The emphasis is on learning by doing.Starting with scales, Chuck Sher guides the reader through chord theory, rhythm studies, soloing, and techniques for pulling apart other peoples music quickly and easily. The appendicies of the book contain transcriptions of songs from bass playing greats like James Jamerson, Charles Mingus, and Jaco Pastorius. This book has transformed my playing and even my approach to playing. It's the only music theory book that I've found completely usefull.
