Q: How large is the actual opening of the frame? How wide are the edges?

The outside edge is 3 1/2" wide on all sides. The inside comes out as 4 equal squares of 4.5 x 7.5" with about 1/2" bar separating sections.

I don’t believe it can. Just offered in the one size

Q: Does this come ready to hang on wall?

All you have to do is tap in the little metal hanger onto frame. Just like you would a picture. Comes with window. Easy to do.

Q: Does the back have a detention into which I might place a pane if glass?

You would have to use a router to cut the channel in to place glass or mirror. It’s possible as the frame is thick enough.
