INSIGHTFUL VIEW OF INNER CITY AT THIS MILLENIUMS TURN , HARD VIEWING AT TIMES , ALSO UPLIFTING .
This is a film of many parts . I dare to review from without the army scenes , as these have often been covered , to varying degrees , but the lead characters here , do a realistic job .Lacey Turner is commendable , brings reality to her roll , is a model example of someone fulfilling their growth into a rounded adult .Her background is similar to mine , so I feel I have to comment on the accurate portrayal of city life , in particular Newham .Were the only white family in the street . This is not racist or a criticism of the films portrayal , but the negative portrayal of all non caucasians , lacks balance , it does a disservice to all those hard working and industrious non caucasians , many of which are my friends .The film is a little Dickensian , in that it pulls no punches , on inner city decay , poverty and hopelessness .Conversely I among many , am a victim of white flight , I am now Welsh , the indigenous population has in the main , welcomed with open arms ,huge swathes of us , that are not racist , but our environments of life , first 40 years , could well be a different continent , there are more languages spoken , many of which are sole languages . My culture and shops have evolved beyond my wildest imagination . My Grammer school , is now asecular muslim school .A recent documentary in Newham , lamented that there was only 2/3 public houses left .In portrayal of inner city , the film is semi-accurate , I commend the BBC for handling the subject without kid gloves ."Sometimes I feel very much at home , sometimes I am terrified and want to get safe as quickly as possible"

An inspiration to all that no matter what you can achieve it if you want it.
I must say that this Film 'Our Girl' is one of the most compelling things i have watched for a very long time. I felt it was so fantastic that i have watched it several times this week and i have expressed the same emotion (cry) every time i have watched it. Lucy Turner takes the title role of a London girl who has a very chaotic life who feels that she wants more from it than she and those around her have. She ends up in an Army recruitment office and the story of how she ends up there becomes clear as you watch the film. As the film progresses and i felt that it was compelling watching you see Molly Dawes (Lucy Turners character name) change her outlook on life and develop qualities and attributes which she had always had but she was not aware of them. Her friendship with Katie a fellow recruit who came from Leyland who had self confidence issues and how they helped each other achieve what they both wanted was an added bonus to this story. The very moving way that the corporal brought the best out of Molly was well done. This whole film is worth watching time and time again and each time i watch it i can see so many different things that the writers wanted to express and bring to our screens. The ending of this film is so well written and acted that my tears flowed even more. Well done BBC and Lucy and everyone who brought this to our viewing. I must say that after watching this I sent a text to each of my three daughters telling them how very proud of them i am and what they have each achieved in life which was not always easy for them either. This Film is a must watch. I know it was only a one off film but if the BBC were to do a series on Molly Dawes i feel it would be compelling viewing.

and - how sad is this - I have watched it every day ...
Absolutely superb ! I pre-ordered the DVDs - issue date 3rd November - within hours of the final episode, and - how sad is this - I have watched it every day since and still get a buzz from the chemistry and sheer magnetism between Dawes and Boss-Man, incredible acting with just eye contact,a flick of the head (Boss-Man) and very little else to imply their sheer, desperate need for each other - which had to be denied. Having viewed again and again, invariably, I find something else to grab my attention/interest - I just have to have my daily fix. Full marks to all supporting actors; 2 section in particular - the one who stands out for me is Brains (Simon Lennon - ?any relation) My gut feeling is that perhaps the blossoming love affair may no be realised (Dawes & James) away from the tension and adrenalin rushes while serving in uniform in a war zone - maybe the difference between their education, background, etc., will prove to be insurmountable - I sincerely, very sincerely, hope not. There aren't enough superlatives to express my sheer viewing please this series has given me........well done BBC; please, please, please say there will be a second series. I can't wait for the n next BAFTA awards to be announced !

The albeit tenuous 'Eastenders' connection, was a turn off for me.
It very nearly prevented me from watching Our Girl on TV; however the military connection just tipped the scales in its favour. The main character was not exactly endearing - but she certainly grew on me. There is a lot that I could say for or against watching this film: initially I found it to be uncomfortable viewing; to the point where I wanted to switch channels, simply because I could not stand who the character was. I stuck with it though, & I am so glad that I did. Lacey Turner has done a fine piece of acting here. There are certain film offerings which leave an indelible mark upon us, when we first invite them onto our TV screens at home; I will only name three (though there are a comparatively few other titles on that list): 'Cathy Come Home' from 1966; 'A Foreign Field' from 1993: & 'Our Girl' from 2013. Put quite simply, if you missed this gem when it was originally screened, don't waste another second, & order the DVD now!

Our Girl, top British Drama..
Hi everyone, happy new year! I think Miss Lacey Turner was superb in Our Girl, most of us know her as the fiesty east end London girl Stacey Slater, she was young and forgive that the acting was a little raw but she has come on leaps and bounds in a mature performance in Our Girl. The Dawes family her character was in is not ideal, big hearts and empty pockets an all that but it shows that if any aspiration to better ones lot through hard graft and dedication is surely an inspiration to us all as young and old alike. Thumbs up to Tony Grounds the writer and may he and Lacey continue their line of work. Cheers...
