The Times Comprehensive Atlas of The World Hardcover – 1 Jan. 2007

Even though it is not the very latest version of the Atlas, the person who I bought it for was very very impressed with this book.It's larger and heavier than I expected, it was worth it though

This is without a doubt the best atlas available. I have other atlases from other publishers but they come nowhere near the Times Atlas for detail. This one has not only large maps showing the big places but also has the detail that you would expect from a map that covers a smaller area showing you the smallest towns.If I want to look up a place this is the first reference I turn to.It says 'Comprehensive Atlas of the World' on the cover and that is exactly what it is.

I own many books. Amongst them are just 2 books I regard as essential reference books - the first is this atlas, the other is the the Larousse Gastronomique (the Oxford English Dictionary was the third but the internet has superseded that).The Times Comprehensive Atlas is a fantastic resource to have in a household. It is huge and lavishly illustrated with beautiful maps of the globe. I would struggle without it as l find myself pulling it out of the cardboard sleeve and opening it to look up somewhere in the news or alternatively to plan a trip. I learn something every time I open it.The maps are beautiful and detailed. The index is excellent too.I have given it four rather than five stars on the basis that there is a slight European and North American bias and also a dearth of political maps (useful for easily explaining to children where countries are).The internet will never supersede this book in my view as there is nothing like the tactile experience of opening this atlas and leafing through the pages. I bought this atlas on Amazon 11 years ago and have never regretted it as I have used it so much.It is not cheap new but there fantastic second hand bargains selling this book at £25 or so, which is what I would buy if I lost the one I have.I regard this as an investment and recommend it.

Very please with this atlas. Gives enormous and clear maps and gives you a good geographical idea of the countries. Does the job well.

Brilliant value for money

Lovely quality book and at a great price from Amazon. Bought it as a present for my dad and he loves it.

This is truely a comprehensive atlas. I bought it as a gift to update the atlas that my husband was given in 1973, which is now very out of date.This is a beautiful book, full of detail and loads of entries for places that we never knew existed. Beautiful maps, lovely colours and a good size.Only one issue for me was the fact that there are price stickers on the book and the case, which when peeled off, reveal the same price.This was annoying, as now I not only have the price showing, but also sticky marks.As it was a gift, I was upset to find this.

I did some research on-line before buying the big Times Atlas, and it seems to be the best available. It's a huge book, inside a protective sleeve. The maps are very attractive, and the index quite astonishing (200,000 items). It's a nice 'thing' to have, but since it arrived a few weeks ago I've only opened it a few times. Whereas I use Google Earth almost daily. Perhaps they aren't 100% comparable - but I could live without the Atlas. I'd really miss Google Earth if I couldn't use it.

I bought this Comprehensive Atlas from Amazon. Because they are selling it very affordable price. I am a geography lover and like Atlases very much. I have already The Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World 13th and 14th Edition. But due to low price comparison of this 12th Edition Comprehensive Atlas I didn't think very much and order this item before price go up. If you want a comprehensive range of Atlas with high quality of pages and mapping in budget price than you can go for it. But from 12th to 14th Edition there are some changes occurs in place names and new country South Sudan was created and many more. But one good thing about this Atlas is that, it considered Kosovo. Current price 2430 INR for this Atlas is affordable and not regretted.

Als Karten-Fan war ich auf der Suche nach einem richtig guten Atlas. Ausgelöst durch einen Besuch in Südafrika und an den Viktoriafällen, den ich gern noch einmal auf der Karte nachvollziehen wollte, suchte ich ein Kartenwerk, das auch in entfernten Regionen Überdurchschnittliches bietet. Mit meinem bisherigen besten Exemplar - "Meyers Großem Weltatlas" - bin ich nur bedingt zufrieden.Vor allem außerhalb Europas sieht es von einigen wenigen, eher willkürlich ausgewählten Beispielen hinsichtlich des Kartenmaß eher traurig aus mit Kartenmaßstäben von 1: 6.000.000 - 1 : 9.000.000.Nach umfangreichem Stöbern im Fachhandel zeichnete sich der "Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World" als DAS (einzige) Standardwerk ab, das diesen Ansprüchen gerecht werden konnte. Hervorhebenswert finde ich auch, dass der "Times Comprehensive Atlas" keine Weltregion bevorzugt darstellt - in deutlichem Gegensatz zum oben genannten Meyers, der sehr eurozentristisch angelegt ist und außerhalb Europas nur noch die USA und Israel in etwas mehr Detail darstellt. Die detaillierte Darstellung im "Times Atlas" ist in der Tat ein Leckerbissen! Um nur einige Beispiele zu nennen: detaillierte Karten der (größeren) Südsee-Staaten ebenso wie der Atlantik-Inseln und die Kleinen Antillen; Neuseeland, China, Persischer Golf und Naher Osten, die Kaukasus-Region, Südafrika oder Mexiko in 1 : 2.500.000, Japan in 1 : 1.000.000. Und die Farben! Endlich mal wieder eine farblich differenzierte Darstellung: Echte Grüntöne für Tiefland und ebensolche Braun- bzw. Braunrottöne für Gebirgsregionen und Grau für's Hochgebirge - wer jemals das merkwürdige Graugrün im Meyers gesehen hat, wird wissen, was ich meine!Praktischerweise ist 2013 eine Neuauflage (13. Auflage) des "Times Comprehensive Atlas" erschienen - allerdings wurde dafür der stolze Preis von € 199,99 aufgerufen - bei Amazon konnte ich das gute Stück für immerhin € 119,99 entdecken. Das erschien mir für einen wirklich guten Atlas mehr als angemessen. Zufällig bin ich dann auf die 2007 erschienene 12. Auflage gestoßen - angesichts eines sensationell geringen Preises von € 23,65 gab es für mich kein Halten mehr: ich musste einfach "zuschlagen"! Noch größer war meine Freude nach Erhalt des Werkes angesichts des beinahe tadellosen Zustands (bei dem Preis hatte ich ehrlich gesagt erhebliche Mängel erwartet). Schuber und Buchrücken weisen leichte Knicke auf, OK, aber das kann auch ein Transportschaden sein, den ich angesichts des Normalpreises im Versand gern in Kauf genommen habe (der sonst fällige Paktepreis aus England hätte den Gesamtpreis ohne Weiteres verdoppelt). Ganz großes Kompliment an den Verkäufer in England!!!

Pros: Detail, Construction, Picture Quality, Exhaustive IndexCons: No City Map Insets (Possibly Size)I bought this atlas for a geography course, and it is without a doubt, the best atlas I have ever used, BUT it is also the most expensive. We have the National Geographic Atlas at the office, and it is good, but it lacks the detail of the Times World Atlas. When I purchased the Times World Atlas it was only $14 more than the NG Atlas. I think it is well worth the difference and more. One thing about the atlas - it is big, really big. This could put some off, and rightfully so, depending on what you need it for. I would not count it as a con because the size of the book is what enables the publisher to produce an atlas that is as detailed as this one

I am very happy with my recent book purchase of The Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World...I have wanted a world atlas for a long time, and finally I own this beautiful, large world atlas, bought at an excellent price from Amazon.ca.This book is a wonderful reference book, full of up-to-date information on important issues like global warming and climate change...also, this book has information on the universe, the planets in our solar system, the stars, the moon, and has beautiful illustrations...I could not have gotten a better world atlas anywhere, at the price I paid for it...this is a book I will treasure and use for years to come...I highly recommend it for anyone who wants a detailed, comprehensive world atlas...I feel as if I can travel the world, simply by going through the pages of this book...it has places and countries, rivers, and oceans that I didn't know existed...I learn new things every time I look through the pages of this world atlas...this world atlas sits in my living room, looking beautiful...it's definitely something to adorn your coffee table, with it's attractive book cover...this book is high quality at an excellent price, as all books bought from Amazon.ca are...thanks so much, Amazon.ca, for offering this book for sale...it's priceless...

Viele Rezensionen sagen, der Atlas sei in englisch. Das stimmt so nicht ganz. In englisch sind nur der einleitende Textteil, sowie die Namen von Staaten und Meeren im Kartenteil.Alle anderen geographischen Namen sind nicht in englisch, sondern in der jeweiligen Landessprache:D.h. die Region Bayern heißt im Atlas Bayern und nicht etwa Bavaria, Burgund heißt Bourgogne und nicht Burgundy.Köln heißt Köln, München heißt München, Rom heißt Roma, Korsika heißt Corse, Kreta heißt Kriti, Athen heißt Athina (nur in Klammern findet man öfters zusätzlich die englischen Begriffe Cologne, Munich, Rome, Corsica, Crete, Athens). Auch Ibiza hat den spanischen Namen Evissa, den englischen Namen Ibiza hingegen nur in Klammern. Genauso wie Mallorca mit dem spanischen Namen Mallorca, der englische Majorca steht nur in Klammern. Griechische Namen sind, wie in anderen Atlanten üblich, nicht in griechischer Schrift, sondern in "unserer" lateinischen. Das entsprechende gilt für Arabien, Indien, China, Japan....Die Höhen der Berge sind in Meter angegeben - selbst für Großbritannien - und nicht in Fuß. Unter den Karten gibt es jeweils 2 Skalen, eine für Meilen und eine für Kilometer.Übrigens, auch im "Knaurs großer Weltatlas" gibt es Kompromisse. Der Viktoriasee heißt dort nicht Viktoriasee sondern "Lake Victoria", also ohne Übersetzung ins Deutsche. Zudem gibt es den Knaurs nur noch Restbestände von Auflagen die älter als 10 Jahre sind - evtl wird es ihn auch nie mehr in deutsch geben. Andere Atlanten erreichen nicht die Kartenqualität von Times/Knaurs.Wenn man den Atlas nicht wegen des Textteils, sondern wegen der sehr guten Karten kauft, kommt man auch mit weniger englisch ganz gut zurecht.
