Very interesting story of british retail
The book gives a summary of the 50 high street names (heroes) and explains the world of retail (more so during the last century). Its a fascinating read, however i think the retail earthquake has had its biggest impact in more recent years with the boom in on line sales. Along with the reality of empty retail spaces on the high street and elsewhere and the yet to be understood long term retail impact of the pandemic - which is likely to accelerate already fast moving changes. My version of the book was published in 2015 and so would have expected it to be a little more up to date in its conclusions.

A very good read -
Very interesting read for anyone who wishes to know more about the history of some of our well known high street stores. I liked this book a lot and think John Timpson is very clever, engaging and at times witty. I admire his business style and feel we need more like him. The sort of person I like to gIve business to. They also have excellent customer service having recently handled a small complaint very well. Certainly retained me as a customer.

An excellent, easy to read and very informative book that does not blind you with facts. Found some of the people listed as "heroes" very interesting and wondered why others were included but al in all can recommend this book.

An interesting read...
A good read, bringing back many memories of the post war UK High Street, and the changes wrought since then, in particular the demise of the 'local' retailer. It goes someway to explaining how the asset value of the occupied premises has affected the success of so many small businesses as much as, if not more so than the quality of goods and services provided. The heart and soul of many small towns has suffered with the loss of the 'small' retailer. Time marches on and change has to be accepted. C'est la vie!

Well worth buying
This is a fascinating book. I am 66 years old, and it brings back a lot of memories of the different shops there were in the 50's and 60's.
