"You're My Wife, Not My Chattel..."
Enjoy Jane Austen and miss Downton Abbey ? BBC One's "Poldark", set in 18th century Cornwall and based on the series of books by Winston Graham, will surely scratch that itch. Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) is a British Army officer – short on temper, high on loyalty, known to thresh corn sans a shirt – who returns from the American Revolutionary War to find that his fiancée Elizabeth Chynoweth (Heidi Reed) is now engaged to his cousin. To restore his family's dwindling fortune he opens one of his family's tin mines and eventually marries the spirited Demelza Carne (Eleanor Tomlinson), though his attempts to lead a peaceful life are constantly thwarted by his own vices and the ongoing feud with business rival George Warleggan (Jack Farthing).Such was the plot of the first two seasons. The third branches into new territory whilst still carrying on the fundamental components of the show: Ross and Demelza's tempestuous marriage, the increasingly bitter hostilities between the Poldark and Warleggan households, and the question of Elizabeth's newborn son Valentine Warleggan's paternity, he having born suspiciously early several months after Ross stormed into Elizabeth's bedroom in the dead of night.Though Ross has grown weary of the feud between himself and the Warleggans, by this stage George is practically obsessed with Ross, convinced that every move he makes is designed to mock and frustrate him. But by now Ross has bigger concerns: the reputations that are at stake should the truth of his night with Elizabeth come out, and the fact that his dear friend Doctor Dwight Enys has been captured by the French.More trouble emerges when Elizabeth's cousin Morwenna and Demelza's brother Drake fall in love – neither family is keen on the match, but George is prepared to go to particularly cruel lengths to ensure that the gentle Morwenna becomes an asset to his own social-climbing. And the lovely Demelza is faced with a choice of her own when she becomes an object of devotion for the puppy-eyed Colonel Armitage. The third season of the show is probably the best so far, with Ross reaching an epiphany about the kind of man he wants to be, and plenty of intrigue to mull over along the way, whether it's derived from the grandeur of government buildings or the destitution of the mining communities. As always, the scenery and costumes are beautiful to look at, and the supporting cast wonderful. Of particular note are Harry Marcus's chipper young Geoffrey Charles Poldark and Caroline Blakiston's acid-tongued Aunt Agatha, staunch allies in their mission to needle George. There's even brief reappearances from Ruby Bentall's Verity and John Nettles's Ray Penvenen."Poldark" is a perfect mix of soap opera and period drama: high production values, talented cast and enough attention paid to historical detail that you don't feel too guilty for enjoying it so much.

Something about the last episode had me a bit annoyed. They changed the way previous Poldark episodes are ...
Had been watching Poldark season 3 on PBS on Sunday nights and there are two more episodes to air. But I ordered the DVD because I just couldn't wait. There are extra scenes in this UK edition which were not in the broadcast version. There was one incident of degradation in the disc but it may just be some dirt. Something about the last episode had me a bit annoyed. They changed the way previous Poldark episodes are directed, I think, and added a couple scenes of introspection/imagined situations. It wouldn't have bothered me if throughout the the seasons they'd done this on occasion, but this novelty seemed out of place because it was introduced so late in the game. It was out of character but I can also see why it was done. Since Ross is not a talkative person they used this tool to show his thought process. I am anxious for the next season and wonder how far into the books they will go. At two books per season, roughly, I can see six seasons.

ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTFUL SAGA THIRD SERIES
And the story continues, as exciting, adventurous, romantic, and historical as the beginning. The characters have been developed, now with depth, and to some of us that have been with this series from the start, they are like family. It is a Cornwall England historic classic. Unfortunately several primary characters find their series end, but surely not the show. It ends with an apparent step into series four, and several new characters new to series three will be on hand for #four. The scenic settings are as much a part of this hit series as the storyline and characters. Vistas you will be dreaming about in your sweet dreams, and some action that could bring on nightmares. Maid Prudie (Beatie Edney) may keep you laughing. Poldark #3 provides it all. Buy all 3 seasons and watch them in order if you are new to this Masterpiece PBS masterpiece.Subtitles provided for all episodes and the abundant, well done bonus material.1 ==Capt Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) and wife Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) reconnect as does her brothers (Drake-Harry Richardson; Sam Tom York). Warleggan (Jack Farthing) plots on now that he’s married/owns a Poldark (Heida Reed) & her child. There is birth/death..2 ==Damalza’s brother Drake meets Warleggan’s governess Morwenna (Ellise Chappell). Ships lost at sea, and a local holy war..3 ==Ross visits France. Does the Dr (Luke Norris) live? Methodist church. A move by the new magistrate..4 ==French prisoners suffer. Cornwall poor starve. New birth and Yuletide..5 ==High action in a French prison escape. Cromwell holds social, political, and romantic entanglements..6 ==Cornwall PTSD. A gift leads to an arrest plot and yet another Poldark attack..7 ==It’s 1795. Morwenna’s in matrimonial agony. Now a Burgess, Warleggan lusts to be MP. Drake takes to smithing and Aunt Agatha (Caroline Blakiston) anticipates a big birthday party..8 ==Warleggan vexed by dying utterances but continues to work toward a parliament seat. Multiple ladies are smitten by alternate men, oops..9 ==French invasion eminent. The women of Cornwall each take their own stand, and it’s not rifle action.

Great value
Last summer I read the complete Poldark series written by Mr. Graham (purchased on Amazon as a set). I loved every book. What made the books enjoyable was the great acting done by the actors in the Masterpiece Poldark season 1 and 2. While reading the books I could see the characters in my mind's eye. I thought I would be bored watching season 3 after reading the books.Actually, I absolutely love season 3 although I already know what will happen!!George Warleggan is developing into a monster we must watch to believe. For the first time I plan on watching each episode of season 3 over and over. I am very happy that exceptional programs like Poldark are available for purchase on Amazon. (I purchased Season 2 and Season 1 of this Poldark series and have them in my video collection.)Buy this Season 3, you won't regret it.

another great season with Poldark
Another riveting season with Ross, Demelza, their family and friends in late 18th century Cornwall during the beginnings of the French Revolution. The storyline continues to bring adventure, intrigue and emotional response from viewers. Breathtaking photography of the Cornwall coast with spectacular colour in the landscape, sea and sky. All the details in the making of this story are true to the time and place in history, from the economical hardships for the poor to the clothing, food, living conditions and lifestyles of both the poor and the rich. The acting is first rate. The performances make the characters very real. Our only regret is that we must wait a few months for season 4 to be available for purchase on DVD. In our opinion, the Poldark series are "right up there" with Downton Abbey as an historical costume drama. We highly recommend it for older teens and adults.

Who does not watch this for Aidan Turner?
I will confess that I started to watch Poldark because of Aidan Turner, but as a fan of historical drama I find the series continues to entertain. Ross is a hero with flaws. In fact, the fallibility of the various characters is what makes the show intriguing. Ross betrays his vows, Doctor Dwight experiences PTSD, proof is given that marriage to an over dressed jack ass is hell and George is still a fink. It is also a lesson in what a society looks like without access to education, affordable healthcare, unemployment insurance and the host of modern programs we take for granted. However, politicians still seem to behave the same, so apparently society has made no progress there. Life is horribly difficult, and yet Demelza still manages to have the most beautiful hair blowing in that Cornish wind. Ah well, a bit of romantic imagery makes TV dramas all the more watchable.

Fabulous for all Poldark Lovers
They have kept the quality of story line as high as the first episode and provided yet more reasons to hate the weasel. Beautiful yet tragic life of two complex people in love in the hard, poverty stricken times of medieval Cornwall, England, Love it all.

PALOMERA.

Just excellent!
A wonderful show, made more lovely and nostalgic by the surprise cameo appearances of actor Robin Ellis, who starred as Ross Poldark in the original production. Appealing actors, fabulous scenery, and plenty of action, which so far has kept true to the Winston Graham novel series.
