This completely hardy variety forms thick established clumps which improve over the years. • Family: Liliaceae • Common name: Lily of the Nile, African Blue Lily • Plant Classification: Hardy perennial • Height(approx.): 2ft •The 'Headbourne Hybrids' are a particularly fine, hardy, vigorous strain of agapanthus with handsome, grey-green, strappy foliage. From mid to late summer, heads of numerous sky-blue, bell-shaped flowers are produced on short, upright stems. Grow plants en masse in the border or in a large container on the patio. They enjoy a sunny position in moist but well-drained soil. For a striking effect, plant at the front of the border with bold coloured plants behind. •Sowing advice: Sow from late winter to spring in a good seed compost just covering the seed. Keep soil damp but not wet. Sealing in a polythene bag after sowing is helpful. Germination usually takes 1-3 months at 15-18C (60-65F). •When seedlings are large enough to handle transplant into 7.5cm (3in) pots and later into 13cm (5in) pots and overwinter in a frost free greenhouse or coldframe. The following spring gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost 5cm (2in) deep and 38-45cm (15-18in) apart in a sunny spot on fertile well drained soil. •Suitable for the garden, allotments and containers. Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season. Regular feeding is recommended.
