Julie & Julia is a film that should be relished with gusto--accompanied by the freshest and best ingredients, pounds of butter, and bottles of the very best wine. It lovingly celebrates the life of one of American food's most influential and beloved figureheads: Julia Child--played here with zest, humor, and a sweet, subtle respect by Meryl Streep, whose performance is spectacular. Julie & Julia is based on the book by Julie Powell, a frustrated New York bureaucrat who wants to be a writer. "But you're not a writer until someone publishes you," she moans. So she gives herself a challenge: to cook her way through Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking in one year, and to blog about it. As Powell (played with chirpy determination by Amy Adams), begins to find her groove as a cook, and her voice as a writer, the project takes on a life of its own--and in the end it does provide the struggling young woman with her life's purpose, to her very pleasant surprise. But mostly, Julie & Julia is a valentine to Child, to Child's amazing love affair with her dashing husband, Paul (Stanley Tucci, as divine as any soufflé in the film), and to her outlook on embracing life, and ordering seconds. Streep throws herself into the Child role with real affection for her character, and while certain of Child's idiosyncrasies--including her warbly voice and unflappable haphazardness in the kitchen--are retained, it's Child's character and vision which form Streep's portrayal, and which make the film so involving and rewarding. Nora Ephron directs with deftness and a light touch, though she seems at times to be encouraging some of Meg Ryan's onscreen tics in Adams (the self-conscious head tilt, for one). But mostly she simply allows Streep to channel Child and her love of food, her husband, and 1950s Paris. And that is a recipe for something truly sublime. -- A.T. Hurley A culinary legend provides a frustrated office worker with a new recipe for life in Julie & Julia, the true stories of how Julia Child's (Meryl Streep) life and cookbook inspired fledgling writer Julie Powell (Amy Adams) to whip up 524 recipes in 365 days and introduce a new generation to the magic of French cooking. Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada) co-stars in director Nora Ephron's delicious comedy about joy, obsession and butter. Bon appétit! Review: An enchanting movie, with a tasty bonus! - One of writer/director Nora Ephron's best films, this charming movie, as it proclaims itself, is based on two true stories, the first being of legendary chef Julia Child's journey in post-WWII Paris to become not just a master cook, but the co-author of one of the great cookbooks of all time, and then the television star so many of us grew up watching. The second part of the tale is set in New York City, post-9/11, where wannabe writer Julie Powell, with her husband Eric's help, comes up with a plan to cook her way through Julia's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking", giving herself one year to make all 524 recipes in the cookbook, and write about her experience in a blog. The stories are wonderfully interwoven and beautifully photographed, with clever writing and stellar performances from all the cast, with a special shout out to Meryl Streep who rises to the challenge of playing the iconic and well-loved Julia Child with her usual acting brilliance. The best part of this particular DVD is that it comes with a bonus "cookbook" (read "booklet") containing 30 recipes from the original cookbook written by Julia Child, Simone Beck, and Louisette Bertholle -- including the culinary star of "Julie & Julia", Boeuf Bourguigion. This is a most welcome complement to the DVD, because the beautiful French dishes prepared in the film often look so delicious that they become scene-stealers. So much so, that one can feel fired up to make some of the recipes oneself. This is exactly what happened with my husband, who initially was just being sweet when he joined me to watch "Julie & Julia". By the end of the film, he was so motivated to try making Boeuf Bourguigion, that he was out shopping the next morning for all the ingredients, and served up a Boeuf that night which certainly did Julia proud! I can't promise that everyone will be so lucky to have a spouse or other family member become so inspired, but I will go so far as to say that the odds are in your favor. Regarding the specs of the DVD, this is the PAL version, and includes a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film, along what is now bittersweet commentary from Nora Ephron, who sadly passed away in 2012, three years after she made this magical film. The photo of the DVD and bonus booklet is pretty accurate as far as size goes. I mention this only because I had it in my head that the book would be a hardcover, and possibly bigger than the DVD package. Happily, its small size is great for slipping into a handbag or pocket and taking to the market. All in all, one of the best DVD purchases I've made in a while. Review: Enchanting absolutely enchanting - I stumbled over this movie by chance and what an enriching find. It's a positive and encouraging story ... actually two biographies no less. This movie is all about food and they translate this subject visually so well, you can almost taste, smell the food they are talking about / cooking in the movie. Furthermore, this is a great biography movie how two normal people, like you and me, discover their calling in life or just simply their passion / a purpose. I love Julia Child's story that even in the less likely stage and circumstances in life, you can find your calling. Its never too late and you should definitely never give up. Opportunities are not tied to young age but your will of successeding. Meryl Street as usual excels in her performance, as does Stanley Tucci and the husband of 'Julie'. Amy Adams, in my view, could have played with more gusto and less whiny. My very manly partner had been resisting this movie for a while, one day he was bored .... well and the rest is history, he loves the movie. In fact he joined me at my cooking classes and now enjoys cooking himself! In my view this is a big impact after watching one movie. I can highly recommend Julie and Julia.

Quite good but doesn't live up to the book..
I read the book 'my life in France' by Julia child's before seeing this film, and I loved the book so thought the film would be good too. Although its quite good I wouldn't rave about it, and was disappointed that there wasn't a huge amount about Julia child's story. It was however a light, sometimes funny film for people who like cooking. Just don't expect it to live up to the book! I would recommend it though.

A good inspiration to start something...
For one, I love to cook, and I welcome movies that are about food. However Julie and Julia goes beyond being a movie about gourmet and connoisseur. It is a movie about finding inspiration to do something and then following it through. The acting was of course perfect by Meryl Streep, Amy Adams and Stanley Tucci. Everybody in the movie as a matter of fact! The emotions, the conversations and attention to detail makes the movie, well, truly entertaining. I love the way the 'French' people in the movie spoke! (Maybe it's because I haven't been to France!) I particularly like the contrast of the locations and time: Julia in beautiful Paris in the 40s to 50s, and Julie in Queens, NY in 2002. Marrying the surreal and the unremarkable to something delightful is what few movies can achieve. I was touched by the unalloyed adoration Julie (Amy Adams) has for Julia (Meryl Streep) even when it didn't seem Julia considered Julie serious or remarkable. People need to find something to adore! That it is on Blu-ray adds a thick layer of crispiness to the movie. Brilliant on my HD TV. Buy this movie. You won't regret it!

Excellent film for lovers of food, Paris or both.
I discovered this film by chance having never heard of Julia Child or her work and in the belief that Elizabeth David had worked largely alone to bring French food to English speaking countries in the 50s and 60s. Both David and Child have clearly been extremely influential, Child perhaps is better known in the United States than in England (or perhaps I just missed the reviews). The film is based on the story of a young woman employed at a call centre who dreams of becoming a writer. As the sleeve notes state she decides that she will cook the entire Child repertoire and report her experiences on her blog. As time passes and new dishes come and go Julie becomes increasingly obsessed by Julia Child and her relationship suffers. In parallel the film flips back to Paris in the 50s where Julia Child is the wife of an Embassy worker, large and dominating in appearance, she enrols at the Cordon Bleu cookery school really for want of something to do. When Child decides to do something she puts all of her enormous energy into her project. In time she meets two French women who have been attempting to collate a recipe book and the film follows the highs and lows of this relationship, rejection of the book and then the search for a publisher which is eventually successful. I don't think I've given away anything here that isn't in the publicity material for the film and I won't spoil the fun of others by describing the plot further. This is not a film that gallops at great pace but it is well acted and evocative of both current life and of life for a certain kind of woman/wife in the 1950s. If you are interested in French cuisine, in Paris and the methods of the Cordon Bleu school, in blogging or in how dreams can turn to obsessions then the modest price of this film would make a good investment.

The Joy of Cooking and Watching
I had been wanting to watch this film for some time and when the price dropped , i clicked and got it instantly ! Showing this much antisipation for this film before it arrived , i watched trialers and interviews , giving a insight into the project , wanting it to come more ! It arrived and what can i say ? I didnt leave the chair i was sitting on for a moment . It was funny , in the way in the director places her jokes , in a delicate and giggly kind of way. It was sweet , as the story can be related to many , man or woman , wanting to find themselves or even to find life once more. The acting was what you would expect for the two leading ladies , who work together before in the movie " Doubt ". The husbands play such a key role in the womans lives and male leads justify this in this film. All and all , it cant be faulted , in my eyes , for me it is the perfect film . Warm tone and great message . Dont fear life ( or food ! ) , enjoy it ( especially the food ! )

Meryl Streep at her best
A great girlie flick that men will love too. Why? I've no idea, but both my partner and my best friend's man love it as much as we do. Julie & Julia sees Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci reunited after working together on The Devil Wears Prada, and they're better together than ever. The story follows the life Julia Childs spent in her 40s with her husband in France and a few other places as he worked for the government. She learns to cook and writes a cookery book with her friends and tries to get it published. Simultaneously the movie follows the story of Julie, a writer who never finished her novel and works at ground zero. She lives in queens and loves to cook and to bring meaning to her life decides to cook her way through Julia Child's cookery book in a year, whilst blogging about it. Both are true stories, both equally fascinating and well intermingled in this hilarious but slightly different "romcom". For anyone interested in cookery, Julia Childs, a good "chick flick" or seeing Meryl Streep act her a** off, this is the movie for you!

Julie & Julia is a 2009 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Nora Ephron starring Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci, Amy Adams and Chris Messina. Meryl Streep plays the role of Julia Child, wife of Paul Child, a diplomat, played by Stanley Tucci. Posted to Paris Julia becomes bored with inactivity and enrolls in Le Cordon Bleu to learn French cooking and, subsequently, begins collaborating on a book about French cooking for American housewives. The book, after a few setbacks, is published and the film contrasts the life of chef Julia Child in the early years of her culinary career with the life of young New Yorker Julie Powell (Amy Adams) who aspires to cook all 524 recipes in Child's cookbook in 365 days, a challenge she described on her popular blog that would make her a published author. This film is a wonderful, light-hearted and often hilarious experience with Streep's charismatic (some would say over-the-top) performance deserving much praise. Tucci, Adams, Messina and the rest of the supporting cast are fabulous and I can think of no other movie that left me with a feeling of complete satisfaction.

Lieblingsfilmkandidat
