The UV-C creates ozone gas, which is what causes the odd smell. Ozone is harmful to eyes and lungs (a few seconds is probably fine). Make sure the room is well ventilated and leave it for a while before you go back in. If you can still smell it, it's at an unsafe level; wait some more. I'm not a medical professional so this isn't official advice. Please read up on it (in reputable science-based websites not new-age therapy sites!).Seems like a good well-made product for something so cheap though. No way to be sure exactly what wavelength it's producing or at what power, but the fact that it produces ozone tells us it's below 250nm i guess.

was fabulous for the fist two uses, then it wouldn't charge, easy refund from Amazon, shame really I wanted it to work!

This lamp is very practical. I’ve used it to get rid of the odour in old shoes, to get rid of the musty smell in my cupboards, to de-germ my fridge and clean the air in my house. I’m very happy with it for the price. The USB cable is a fair length and the instruction book is straightforward to implement. The 15-minute working time with self-shut off is useful, as you can leave it on in a room with the window open and come back to it later. It seems reliable so far, I’ve dropped it once and it still works fine. I can’t really find fault with it. I'm very happy with the purchase! With owning dogs having to deal with flu season it’s a good tool to improve my environment!

item seems to do the job,but the reason i have marked it down is that i purchased 2 & after using them & recharging,1 of them would not recharge so has had to be returned.i will have to see how the other one lasts.
