## Overview

Introduction to Linear Algebra by Gilbert Strang is a globally acclaimed textbook that blends foundational theory with cutting-edge applications in optimization and data science. With over 50 years of MIT teaching experience, Strang presents matrix factorization, eigenvalues, and least squares in a clear, engaging style, making this sixth edition essential for professionals and students aiming to excel in quantitative fields.

## Description

Linear algebra now rivals or surpasses calculus in importance for people working in quantitative fields of all kinds: engineers, scientists, economists and business people. Gilbert Strang has taught linear algebra at MIT for more than 50 years and the course he developed has become a model for teaching around the world. His video lectures on MIT OpenCourseWare have been viewed over ten million times and his twelve textbooks are popular with readers worldwide. This sixth edition of Professor Strang's most popular book, Introduction to Linear Algebra, introduces the ideas of independent columns and the rank and column space of a matrix early on for a more active start. Then the book moves directly to the classical topics of linear equations, fundamental subspaces, least squares, eigenvalues and singular values – in each case expressing the key idea as a matrix factorization. The final chapters of this edition treat optimization and learning from data: the most active application of linear algebra today. Everything is explained thoroughly in Professor Strang's characteristic clear style. It is sure to delight and inspire the delight and inspire the next generation of learners.

Review: Top class - Legendary book and explanation to Linear Algebra. Everyone who wants to understand AI should have this as starting point.
Review: Great book - abysmal delivery - A classic of Linear Algebra, really well explained and layed out. Sadly I only got it because a kind postman picked it up from the top of a bin in the next street where the desertcart delivery driver left it. I recommend the book, but I hope you have better luck than me with the delivery!

### ⭐⭐ Be aware of the edition number!
*by K***R on 4 June 2024*

I just finished watching the great online MIT lectures - those were amazing and it became clear why everyone's such a fan of Strang! But I'm rating *this* specific 6th, latest, edition of *the book*, not the lectures. I found it quite confusing - the very good thing about it was that it led me to the open MIT website, so great, got quickly hooked on the lectures, but just judging it as a book - it might not be where you want to start. I've been comparing it with the 4th edition, and that earlier edition, which is the one the online course materials most directly and consistently refer to (e.g., the readings per lecture are given for 4th and 5th edition, but the assignments only from the 4th edition). The 4th edition was quite different - it took more time to develop ideas, didn't introduce so much so quickly. The content is similar but I think it could be more confusing in this edition. So I think the recommendation I'd give, with my current understanding, is: Watch the online lectures first and foremost, with the 4th edition alongside for reading and exercises. That said, the *content* is great, and I believe it's added things since earlier editions, so I'm sure it has its own value, but as indicated by another reviewer, you could be disappointed if you think it'll work as a book for independent study.
