Product description Pickler,Kellie ~ Small Town Girl .com This debut album by the small-town girl with the big, powerhouse voice showcases two distinctly different sides of Kellie Pickler's music. The hard-riffing uptempo material recalls the heartland rock of Bob Seger and John Mellencamp, with Pickler providing a good-ole-girl twang. Among the highlights are the emancipated strut of "Red High Heels," the playful humor of "Things That Never Cross a Man's Mind," and the tomboy bluesiness of "One of the Guys." Yet the American Idol finalist turns pure diva on the over-the-top balladry of the album's other half, with swelling strings and arrangements that overpower rather than enhance "I Wonder" and "I'm on My Way." On such cuts, producer Blake Chancey (Dixie Chicks) never gives Pickler a chance to show the subtlety and nuance that makes music more an art than a competition. --Don McLeese

Genuine. Heartfelt. Sassy. Sexy. Real.
"Small Town Girl" lets Kellie Pickler be Kellie Pickler. The result is an album that offers both emotionally ripping ballads and catchy, playful country/rock tunes.Break out the tissues AND the six-packs for this one.GIVE THE ALBUM A CHANCE:"Small Town Girl" may shock the people she failed to win over on "American Idol," or those that look down on the show's alums. But there's a reward for those that give the album a chance, and likely, a change of heart. I've heard glowing praise from several converts since the CD's release.MY FAVORITE TRACK: "I WONDER"I find myself fighting tears every time I hear this ballad about her mother, who walked out on Kellie when the future singer/songwriter was 2 years old. I can't remember when a song affected me so deeply.KELLIE THE SONG WRITER:Kellie co-wrote five of the songs while on the American Idol tour. Those tracks -- "Red High Heels," "My Angel," "Small Town Girl," "One of the Guys," and "I Wonder" -- are standouts for me.But there isn't a bad track here, and all tracks fit her perfectly.THE VERDICT, A HOME RUN:Kellie Pickler poured her passion, her personality, her heart and soul into this album. The result is country's best new album.

Country music fans may have a new sweetheart here.
I really really don't care for country music. So sue me. But this Kellie Pickler is OK.I have to tell you, I bought this album on an impulse...personality-wise, I enjoyed seeing Miss Pickler on "Idol."Like I said, the stereotypical country sound...twangy bowed guitar, simple drum beats, accented vocals and recycled subject matters...does nothing for me. But I have to admit I kinda enjoyed this.I think those who enjoy country will LOVE this. This is a quality album; the songs are sturdy, the production crisp. I liked the uptempo songs...one song initially sounds like an outtake from Mellencamp's "Lonesome Jubilee", with angular guitars and off-kilter rhythms, before becoming a bit more mainstream. Her voice is fine...not overpowering but the kind of "everyman's" (or "everywoman's") voice that's very appealing and empathic. There's not a lot of oversinging, warbling, or other distractions. Two songs in particular I'd like to single out:"Things That Never Cross A Man's Mind" is a funny, uptempo, sassy number that Shania Twain would have made ten years ago.And "I Wonder" is a beautifully sung ballad, showing that Miss Pickler may have a seriously successful future if her career is managed well, and she continues to smartly select her songs and collaborators.Other songs, though, I found cringe-worthy...I'm sure somebody out there loves the song to her grandmother, and the sentiment is certainly sweet, but the song will give you cavities."Red High Heels", "Small Town Girl" and "One of the Guys" all work for the genre just fine. For me, I was wanting something a little bit more pop-rock...or perhaps a little bit less country.Having said all that...let me reiterate...I really liked this record despite NOT really liking country music. So that says a lot. Country music fans may have a new sweetheart here.

OK but not great
I like Kellie's personality. She reminds me of Dolly Parton, and her voice sounds a bit like hers also. I don't think she has a great vocal range, but with the right song, that can be OK. Her voice is certainly passable and there are many people with very successful careers who did not have the greatest voices. One thing I have noticed about Kelly is that she always cries during live versions of "I Wonder" I have noticed that she tends to break down towards the end of the song; the piece that requires the greatest vocal range. My belief is that this is a ploy to avoid her having to possibly fail to reach those notes during a live performance. A few tears and no one will notice that those notes aren't hit. I hope I'm wrong, but while I do enjoy this CD, I'm afraid that her live performances could make or break her career.

Small Town Girl
I love the way that Kellie Pickler's songs tell a story, usually about one of her family members. She obviously adores her grandmother and grandfather and it's awesome how she sings about them. She has immortalized them forever, which I think is a wonderful tribute! She was born on exactly the same day (in the same year too) as my daughter, plus I have met her and she's a sweetheart, so you won't hear a bad word about anything she does from me! Not only is this CD worth purchasing, but all of her other ones are equally as good. She has not put out a bad CD yet, and I'm not just saying that because I like her. If you truly just sit back and listen to her CDs, you'll find that you end up liking just about every song on every CD.

Love sassy and feisty? Buy this one!
I was not a big fan of kellies musically on AI. I do buy a lot of idol cds to support them. Bought kellie's, played it and loved every single song! That is a first for me! It is soooooooo sassy and feisty that I just love it. Red High Heels is one of those songs you can't get out of your head and my fav, however, all the others are very good. I was sooo surprised at how well her voice recorded and the great job she does. WTG to the record company for giving her good songs, most idols dont get that. Buy this cd! Im also giving it as gifts.

Superb album, can't wait for her follow up album released later this year!!
This is an excellent country album. I don't watch American Idol and had never heard of Kellie Pickler before but I saw some clips of her on American Idol on YouTube and thought she sounded quite good. There was one of her singing Dolly's 9 to 5 and she sounded EXACTLY like her and it was that that persuaded me to buy her CD. (Plus I loved the way she talked!)Anyway, I was very pleasantly surprised when I heard the album, it's better than alright or quite good, it's brilliant!! In fact I just finished playing it the first time and I loved it so much I've put it straight back on again!!She is much better on the CD than she appeared to be in the American Idol clips and even in those I thought she was good! Anyway, I love it so much I can't wait to buy her new CD which is out soon I believe!I am loving the music Nashville is putting out at the moment, Kellie is just the latest I've heard that I have absolutely loved. Others are Taylor Swift, of course, Katie Armiger, Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood. And of course I still love LeAnn Rimes although I wouldn't say her latest album is one of my favourites, her voice seems to have changed a little and I am not so keen on her new sound. I still think she is brilliant though of course.

She Should Have Won American Idol 5!
When I watched American Idol 5 I really liked Kellie's personality and her voice and really wanted her to win and when she was voted off I thought it was totally wrong. Turns out she didn't need to win anyway, because her debutalbum is absolutely amazing! A few of my thoughts on each trach would be:1. Red High Hells - Really catchy and just one of those songs you simply have to sing along to, a brilliant first single2. Gotta Kepp Moving - Amazing song with great music behind her voice3. Things That Never Cross a Man's Mind - Anoth catchy song and one of the most country-sounding on the album4. Didn't You Know How Much I loved You - Really heartfelt and you can hear the conviction in her voice5. I Wonder - Probabaly the best song on the album, and about Kellie's mother, who left her when she was a baby. This is the saddest song I've ever heard and the emotion that comes through her voice is incredibly powerful6. Small Town Girl - The album's title track and another one you find yourself singing along to7. Wild Ponies - Great vocals and again some really good music behind it8. Girls Like Me - I loved this song! Her voice carries the lyrics beautifully9. I'm On My Way - Really nice lyrics in this one, another good song10. One of the Guys - This song has the country-sound to it like others and is a nice diversion from the others on the album11. My Angel - A contender for the best one on the album along with I Wonder. This one's about her grandmother who raised her and the grief is really evident in Kellie's voice, which really connects with you if you've lost a close grandparent too.Overall I'd highly recommend this album to anyone, even if you don't usually go for country music. I've also got the albums from American Idol winners/contestants Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood and Katharine McPhee, and Kellie Pickler's is definately up at the top, just behind Carrie Underwood's Some Hearts!!!

I like Carrie Underwood and Lauren Alaina only Kellie does have ...
I watched Kellie on American Idol only missed out the rest of the show when it was taken off ITV3 and moved over to a different channel. I like Carrie Underwood and Lauren Alaina only Kellie does have more of an up beat feeling with this album. I have listened to it twice and really enjoy her tone of voice. Waiting for her other albums to drop to a lower price so can see if they're just as good.
