I’ve been curious for a while about trying out a VR headset so took the plunge and ordered a pair of “Volport VR Mini Virtual Reality Glasses”. Although there were no pre-existing Amazon reviews the product looked nicely finished from the photos and as an entry level VR headset the pricing looked good.The headset arrived as ordered quickly and packaged very securely.After unboxing, adjusting the glasses to size and inserting my phone (iPhone 6 4.7”) was quite intuitive. There is a very basic clamp on the front of the unit that holds your phone securely in place – my phone has a rear leather cover which could easily be accommodated without having to be removed and which I think also added to the security of the clamp grip.There are no QR codes to scan for any additional software or that lead you to content to play on your headset so you’ll have to run your own searches on YouTube or in the app store for content – make sure that you look for VR side by side videos (basically this splits your phone screen into two showing a separate image for the left and right eyes, if you try a normal video or 360 video that shows full screen on your phone then this cannot be viewed properly when wearing the glasses).After a week playing with the product here is my verdict..Pros :Good, sturdy quality materials that look very smart and well made – smooth matte black plastics, robust looking wide elastic straps.The headset is easy to put on and adjust to provide a comfortable fit and feels like it would provide suitable adjustment for both children and adult users (only used for short durations so far, not for sitting down to watch a full movie so cannot confirm longer duration comfort).Cons:Without my phone case on the grip of the phone isn’t secure enough that I’d feel safe using these over a hard surface.There is no padding around the face fitting side of the glasses and although not uncomfortable I found that just natural breathing could fog up the lenses a little.There are no adjustments that can be made to change focal length etc. to get the optimal focus of the screen display.Verdict :I would say that these are a cheap entry level set of VR glasses that do not have the whistle and bells that you might find on some other VR headsets, such as close fitting soft padding or optical adjustments and I’d have to say that if I were choosing again I would look for these features. However, if simplicity is what you’re after then this headset does provide basic viewing.I’d also comment (unrelated to the product) that I was pretty disappointed with the range of VR content that is available, lots of short 3d clips etc. but I guess I was naively expecting to be able to watch longer content – if this is available and I’ve missed it then I will add to this review at a later date but for now it feels like one of those purchases where you go for the gadget and after an initial half hour of novelty use it’s something that I probably won’t think to pick up again..I received this product at a discounted price in return for an honest, impartial and un-biased review.
