The illustrations were superb but the story as written was too truncated.

I love the pictures!

Great book! One of my 5 year olds favorite books.

A good introduction to the novel, by Mark Twain.

'Read-Aloud Classics: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer' by Charles Nurnberg and Joe Rhatigan with art by Glenn Harrington is a picture book version of the famous story condensed down for younger children.Told with a series of lush and beautiful paintings, this is the story of Tom Sawyer. Here is Tom who plays hooky, and paints a fence. He has adventures with his friend Joe and Huck playing pirates on a raft and going inside a haunted shack and finding a cave with treasure.The rough bits are suppressed. Even the parts with Becky seem to have been lopped out. What's left is a pretty gently story with nothing to frighten small children. What wins it for me are the illustrations. Full paintings fill each page, and you can see the brushstrokes flowing across the rivers and skies.This acts as a nice introduction to a classic work by a classic author. I first read the full book when I was 8 or 9, but this is meant to provide some familiarity for younger readers, and a lovely to look at one, at that.I received a review copy of this ebook from Moondance Press, Quarto Publishing Group, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I am personally excited by the Read-Aloud Classics from MoonDance Press. I know from personal experience the impact of introducing the great tales from literature to youngsters ages 2 to 6.The Classics Illustrated Comic Books inspired me to read my favorite stories in the originals by age eleven.When our son was a child I happened upon abridged versions of the classics, presented in little paperback books. Soon my son was reading the original books of his favorites.I sincerely believe that great stories engage readers of every age and that by familiarizing children with age-appropriate presentations these books will become friends to be revisited when older.The Adventures of Tom Sawyer has artistic illustrations of great beauty and nostalgia. The scenery is vivid and gorgeously rendered with wide skies of deep color, the greens and blues of water, and the warm colors of the cave lit by a torch.This abridgment of the story is appropriate for the youngest children, concentrating on the iconic characters of Tom, Becky, Aunt Polly, and Huck Finn. Memorable scenes of the fence painting, the boys running away on the river, playing pirates and treasure hunting, and Tom and Becky lost in the cave will spark the imagination of a child.
