One thing I was told by a Dyson service Rep was to clean out the the dirt housing canister before it gets too full because the dust can backup or sucked into the motor which causes the power when the switch goes on and automatically shuts down the unit. So besides cleaning the air filter it is important to maintain the dirt housing by dumping it before it is completely full.
