Smallville: The Complete Second Season [2002] [DVD]

Smallville- Series 2. Hit Or Miss?
After the fairly staid formulaic structure of the first season of Smallville (I rate it at 4*), it was nice to see that the show's creators finally threw off some of the creative shackles. This was great news as I am a huge fan of the show. The burning question for me was whether this new lease of life was going to be enough. And, I can happily say, yes it is. This second chronicle in the legend of Superman is absolutely bloody fantastic. It's all here. Heat vision? Check. Ever growing tension in the Clark/ Lana/ Chloe love triangle? Check. Red Kryptonite? Check. Throwing these obvious pleasures aside, the real show stopper is the increasing paranoia of Lex Luthor (Mike Rosenbaum). Episode after episode, his fascination with Clark grows and grows. Clark (Tom Welling) is blissfully ignorant of this, thinking Lex and himself are going to be friends forever. Jonathan Kent (John Schneider) is right to suspect Lex's motives as the two-faced Luthor is making investigative enquiries behind his back. This is a great extension of the plot from the first season. And yes, it finally happens. After spending the first season watching Lana behind an emotional 'door', Clark is finally getting close to the girl of his dreams. But not without a few obstacles. Lana has to deal with the death of her Marine boyfriend, Whitney Fordman, as well as her own frustration at Clark's complete inability at keeping a promise. This shows great promise for a psychological hero complex to emerge. Mmmmm, delicious. That brings us to Clark's latest addition to his superhero arseanl, heat vision. This comes about accidentally, with un-intentionally funny consequences. Clark setting fire to a school projector screen while checking out a really HOT (sorry about the pun there) teacher (Krista Allen) who actually turns out to be Lex's fiancee, Disaree. Masterful. It turns out that the heat vision is, initially, triggered by thinking of sex. So you then get Clark with Lana, alone, in the Talon, together and a whole lot of torched decor. Mmmmm, flamey. Anyway, I think I should let you buy the set and find out for yourselves. I do have one grumble though. Where's the episode guide that Season 1 came with? Other than that, a superb series is put together with a superb dvd boxset. The special features are definitley worth a look, with a fantastic documentary on the SFX of Smallville. MMMMMMMMMM. Yeah, I cannot wait for the Season 3 set. Bring it on!!!!!! Peace out.

SEASON 2 OF SMALLVILLE IS A LOT DARKER AND BETTER THAN S1
Smallville season 2 is better than season one as it picks up where season 1 left of and you find out if lana survived the tornado. Chloe admitts her feeling to clark to lana and tells her she is in love with him in fever when clark is ill. Clark and Chloe fight because he is not spending enough time with her. Christopher Reeves shows up in one episode on disc 5 explaining the message his parents left him. Rush is also an episode i enjoyed much when chloe and pete get effected with some bug inside of them and Chloe admitts her feeling to Clark. In Red Clark is affected by red kyptonite and his personality is affected. In the last episode on disc 6 Clark leaves town because his mum has lost her baby and Chloe is asked to work for lionel luthor. Apart from that it is alot darker and i can't wait for season 3 to be released and i hav enjoyed this season than i did for season 1. The special features are really good especially the one where it is the christopher Reeves featurettes called the FX OF SMALLVILLE AND Christopher Reeves. One thing why did they not have a feature with the cast on season 2 and asked what they thought about the season and i thought that might be a good one on there. Brillant season it is a MUST BUY, but do not see it if you have not got season 1 as you won't know what has happened.

Building momentum
So here we go, picking up the rather weak Cliffhanger of the first season, we come to season 2. By now I was satisfied at how the first season had given us a good setup, I was very much looking forward to seeing some main plot developement.Unfortunately for the first half of the season we have mainly standalone storylines much like the first season. Not completely a bad thing but quite predictable by this point. And then Christopher Reeve comes along as Professor Virgil Swann, who informs Clark of his Kryptonian heratige, giving a sense that we are finally getting somewhere near to unlocking the shows true potential. And it does, from this point on, the show really starts to build some momentum and finds its feet.In summary: The show continues much in the spirit of its first season, the later parts of the season bringing some real movement to the Superman story.

Smallville goes from strength to strength...
Starting a moment after the season one finale Smallville continues the story of Clark's younger years. This season really stands out in memory, the sheer quality of the episodes is amazing, there are more memorable episodes in this series than in any other combined. Furthermore there is a movement away from "freak of the wekk" episodes, with several episodes reveolving around the characters and their backstory, not monsters and threats to them.Clark's identity (as Kal-Ell is revealed to him, as is the fate of Krypton), Pete find oout about Clark's secret, Red K causes havoc turning Clark into a moralless teenager, secrets about Clark's adoption and Lex's brother are revealed, Clark lays on his deathbed and Clark is told to leave Smallville and complete his father's quest to rule the planet.Along with these arks, there is the continuing storyline of Chloe and Clark, that was left hanging in Tempest, this slops both Clark and Lana coming closer as Chloe looks on sadly. Clark's adoption is revealed to have been organised by Lionel Luthor (who is also blinded at the beginning of the season), Lionel and Lex jokel against each other as Lionel quashes Lexcorp, and Clark is appauled by the intrustions of his father. This is my favourite season, as it was for the viewing figures (check wiki), characters continue to eveolve and change, and leaving a fantastic cliifhanger which I won't spoil. If you liked Season 1 you'll love this, if you loved season 1 you'll be overjoyed.

The story picks up and gets better!
Season 1 ends on an explosive ending that makes season 2 start off very strong and compellingly. After the conclusion with episode 1, it offers insight on a mystery that lasts throughout season 2 and is solved by a surprise guest star who played the original movie superman! Another great thing to note is the introduction to Clark's new heat vision which goes nicely and plays just as an important role as his x-ray vision. Personally I really enjoyed season 2 much more than season 1 but I did love the fact that a lot of characters and villains make cameos and reappearances throughout the season which slowly starts to take its toll on Clark. Ultimately, he makes a sad and shocking decision by the end of the season as his character grows to be one that most of us can easily relate and feel empathy for. Aside from that, the video presentation does improve with less artifacts as well as the cgi/special effects having more effort put into them. The audio did seem off at times, almost sounding like mono, but its understandable as its a 2.0 stereo track which still sounded more pleasant compared to season 1's audio track. Overall its a very solid season that you should give a chance if you didnt like season 1 and the "freak of the week" episodes.

Parfait
Pour moi toutes les saisons de cette superbe série apportent une pierre à l'édifice de la construction du super héros ...c'est donc avec grand plaisir que je visionne cette saison et j'attends avec impatience que mes enfants grandissent pour la partager avec eux.
