Recipes of Sweden: A Classic Swedish Cookbook (Good Food from Sweden)

A whole lot of text with no images.Thought this would be a good present for someone who is interested in cooking and wanting to try Swedish style cuisine. However to a twenty something it may seem like a boring gift without the modern style layout of the recipe along with an image of the finished dish.The recipes are comprehensive but maybe too much so, but if you want that 'just how grandma did it' then in that respect is is good.The book is informative. Just needs to be updated with some images.

I bought this thinking I would be able to make Swedish dishes, bread and buns etc easily and without fuss. But in order to use it I had to convert the American system of " cup" measurements into metric weights. Then I had to find out what unfamiliar ingredients such as "yeast cakes", "pearl sugar", "powdered sugar ", "bitter almonds" etc. A phone call to a Scandinavian friend was not much help - she did not know either! Having guessed at suitable substitutes I then had to convert oven temperatures from Fahrenheit to centigrade. But this was not the end of my problems ........ none of the baking recipes indicated length of cooking time in the oven!. I felt a bit like a contestant in the Bake off technical challenge. The book is going to the charity shop.
