Masterpiece: My Mother and Other Strangers

Entertaining Period Drama.
Fans who enjoy period drama, war stories, love stories, family dynamic stories, or anything set in Ireland will find something to like in this series. The story unfolds in a satisfying way, and the character development is so well-done that the viewer feels like they actually know the residents of this village. The settings are also realistic and easy on the eyes. While we enjoyed almost everything about the series, we just couldn't warm up to the lead actress. Perhaps it was her predictable, fixed expression during most of her scenes. (Others have critically commented on her "deer-in-the-headlights" look.) That's just a personal preference thing, and really has nothing to do with her acting ability. I'm sure many other reviewers enjoyed her performance more than we did. That aside, I think this is a solid four-star series.

I'll remember this story for the rest of my life.
This is an outstanding non-political drama of lifestyle, and romance, in 1943 in Northern Ireland area being used by an American air base. It is a character-driven mini-series telling the life of an English woman who married a Northern Irish man but finds secret enchantment with an American soldier acting as liaison to the rural community. The story is actually told by the married couple's young son, who is now older and reflects on his life and happenings as flashbacks to the wartime period. What delightful wartime storytelling, cinematography, and yet lends itself to a bit of the unusual with it comes to Hallmark Masterpiece. This falls in the upper tier of dramatic portrayals of the UK war home-front of WW2. More local drama than war. Family friendly.SDH SUBTITLES provided for those needing them. I liked that because some colloquial language is used, and a few strong and fast accents. The only negative, is that at this time, it doesn't appear they are working on a second season. It was a mini-series, not an ongoing series, like you'll wish for at the conclusion.

No Resolution
I enjoyed season 1 very much but the ending sets you up for a continuing story and there is no season 2. Conflicts are not resolved, love stories end abruptly and there are no answers to all the questions raised in season 1. If I had known this earlier, I would not have purchased the DVD.

Lovely World War II Period Piece
I purchased this movie for our retirement community's library. It has great character development and great actors. I only wish that it had a better ending. Many residents have complained to me that they want to see more to the plot at the end.

Great show
This was a great series. I first saw an episode on PBS, but bought the DVD so I could watch the shows in sequence. I am glad I did. I liked the characters, the plot and the acting. Irish characters, but I didn't need the subtitles except sometimes for the colloquial accents of the kids. I wished it wasn't over, but thought it ended in a good place. It would be hard to maintain the suspense of what happened so far.

Hattie Morahan is amazing.
I loved this on Masterpiece on TV. I’ve been watching Masterpiece for many, many years! My Mother and Other Strangers was a favorite so I needed to have it so I could watch it over and over. Hattie Morahan is so fun to watch and so interesting. I wanted more but sorry to say there wasn’t a continuation of the story. I guess I’ll have to imagine various scenarios of what I wanted to happen.

A genuinely interesting Film.
This is an interesting but, to me, ultimately disappointing look at a very interesting subject--the relationships between American Forces in WWII and the English or Irish local residents. Perhaps if the look had been more penetration this could have been much more rewarding. You may want to look for yourself because it's riveting right up to the end.

a Golden Globe and whatever other awards are given for Best Ever Performance
North American audiences have been cheated out of seeing more of Hattie Morahan as the lead actor in movies and TV shows. Her performance in this series is incredible and different than any actor I've seen before. Every one of "Rose's" emotions and feelings seem genuine, believable and heartfelt. I can certainly see why writer Brian Devlin wrote this series for Hattie as the main character. The "Rose Coyne" role that Hattie portrays so magnificently and believably should be nominated for an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and whatever other awards are given for Best Ever Performance. The rest of the cast are also great from little Kate to Michael Coyne. Fionna Buttons’ role as Rose's sister Vera was also an award-winning performance.SPOILER ALERT!It's an entertaining multi pronged story about a family's struggles and those of the residents of a small isolated Irish community during the war but Rose is the central character that brilliantly portrays the powerful control unexpected love can have on an otherwise rational, intelligent, responsible, virtuous, selfless, devoted wife and mother of three great kids when they least expect it. The only criticism of the production is that the 5-part series should’ve been 6. One more episode would have allowed some scenes and encounters between Rose and the Captain to end less abruptly. Perhaps Hattie's real life pregnancy was part of the reason.

This is not a new DVD as I ordered
I paid full price. Clearly, discs were a but scratches with foggy patches. I haven't played it yet but I do miss those product code white stips that prevent a used product from being resold.I saw this on PBS and liked the series. It's charming.
