Very nice inspiring book about kimono
Nice, detailed book about the beautiful and complicated language of kimono. It gives a good overview of the history of kimono-wear, how it developed during many centuries and it gives detailed instructions how to wear kimono today. Great for enthusiasts and beginners as well.

Very detailed but a scholarly text
Unlike Geisha which was an academic piece of work but expanded into more of an autobiographical recollection of Dalby's time in Japan, with personal stories of her own experience and experiences' of women she spoke to, this is definitely more of a scholarly text.It is very comprehensive and well researched as you would expect from Dalby, and there are some interesting pieces in there. But I think the structure/order of the chapters doesn't always make sense, and I'll admit it was quite a heavy, dense read which meant I didn't completely finish it and enjoy it the same way I did 'Geisha'.Recommended if you have a real scholarly interest in kimono but for the average person it's probably too much.
