Lonely Planet Pocket Barcelona (Travel Guide)

Fantastic guide book
This is the first lonely planet guide I’ve purchased and I absolutely love it. We were only planning a day trip to Barcelona whilst on holiday to Spain so purchased this to help plan. It separates the info into the different areas, gives you admission prices, opening times for attractions, average price of meals etc for restaurants. There are planned walks you can do and a few different itinerary ideas depending on the length of your stay. There is a pull out map at the back, information and history about the city and region, a few pages on common phrases in Spanish you might need. It really is a lovely book and obviously pocket size so easy to carry about. I’m hooked on these lonely planet guides now and want them all, regardless of if I’ll be travelling there, they are just interesting books. My only problem, and this may be because the book is slightly outdated now, was we planned to visit La Sagrada Familia, the book does say to book online to avoid queues but we weren’t sure when we would be arriving so thought we’d brave the queues. Our whole day was based around this visit and when we arrived we were told tickets had sold out for the day so we couldn’t enter. We had no idea that the tickets could sell out and I feel like this book should have mentioned it. It was too late in the day for us to change our plans and we felt extremely disappointed. So if you have purchased the older edition just be aware of things like that and maybe double check the info elsewhere. Other than that, fantastic book and very helpful.

Easy to use and well laid out
I was really pleased with this for my three day visit to Barcelona. It has a "quick start" guide with top 5 sights to see in the city, and it has a proposed itinerary for a 5 day trip if you can't cope with working your own out! It has small maps for each section of the city and then the larger pull out map. The city-sections thing is really handy as you can look up restaurants or bars near you easily - it directed us to a number of great vegetarian places! My only complaint is that the large pull out map doesn't have map references which correspond with anything in the guide book - so some scanning and scrutinising is needed if you want to navigate with that instead of just the book. In fact, were it not that the pull out map has a metro map on it, I'm not sure we would have used it at all.One thing the book doesn't mention is that if you're visiting Park Guell, La Sagarda Familia, and any of the other "big" sights, you MUST pre-book your tickets online the day before as everything was sold out first thing in the morning if you turned up in person!

Good finds
Some really good finds which aren't included in other guides. Although I prefer the format of DK Top 10 guides this one had a lot of interesting shops and attractions to recommend. The area maps and subway map were the most useful parts, they are really good. One thing which was missing from this guide and a couple of others we had was a map of Park Guell. That would be something to put in the next update!

The Perfect Pocket Guide To Barcelona
This is a superb travel book for so many reasons and really helped me capture the true experience of Barcelona whilst I was there. It’s really up to date, covers all the typical tourist places as well as fantastic authentic places to eat and drink, as well as things to do and a wealth of information about the city and it’s history. if you’re going on a weekend to the Spanish city, this is essential!

A fantastic series of books
This will be our fourth purchase of the lonely planet pocket series and won’t be our last! The books are small enough to fit in to a handbag or pocket for when you’re out and about and need some inspiration or even a map. They also give enough information to help plan your trip wisely without giving the game away on all of the things you will be discovering at your destination.Having already visited Barcelona once before, I can say that this book has the perfect amount of information to plan a trip from a quick weekend to a week. Excellent.

Highly recommended
A brilliant, useful, well researched guide. We slavishly followed its recommendations on a recent trip to Barca, and can't recommend it enough. The information is clearly set out, with great tips for making the most of your visit. My only complaint is we took the cable car on its recommendation, not realising that it is really just a tourist attraction, rather than a serious mode of transport. The guide also failed to mention that we would be completely scared out of our wits on the (fairly rickety) cable car - a warning that it is not for the fainthearted/scaredy-cats among us, would have been nice.....Other than that, a really excellent little guide.

Helpful, but..
This book was helpful but there were many things that we wanted to see and didn't know we had to book in advance, like Sagrada Familia or Park Guell and therefore couldn't visit. Would've been nice if the book had let us know.

Perfect for a short getaway
Very handy book, used it extensively. Map was very easy to use and believe me it was used a lot. Right size to be tucked away in the back pocket of my jeans. Very informative and I really liked the way the areas of Barcelona were split up and each one was reviewed.Made my weekend very enjoyable.

Great recommendations!
I love the lonely planet pocket guides. This one helped me identify a bunch of activities to do in Barcelona and find some amazing places to eat too. I also like the fold-out map because it has the metro lines.

Very helpful
I was in Barcelona for 2 days last fall and used this book to get the most out of my visit, plus it's small to easily fit into my cross body bag. I looked at recommendations for restaurants, activities and sites worth seeing and was not disappointed. Great little map as well. We stayed in the Barri Gotic and read all 'don't miss' as well as history of the area.

Good book to review prior to going
Good book to review prior to going. Found a small restaurant (The Salteria) in fine print in the book that turned out to be the best meal we have ever had while on vacation. Handy book
