And if so would it require external support?** A: Yes, it could be buried half way, however, no you can't use it to form a raised bed with soil in it. The panels are not rigid, so soil behind them would cause them to bow very badly. You'd need to stake them with something rigid at least every 12", and even then they would probably bow between the stakes. **Q: can I connect this to make a square?** A: It is 60 mil. Plastic. If above ground, it will bulge out, roundish, from weight of dirt inside. If below ground, surrounded by dirt, it can be just 4 panels linked, to set into a square space. **Q: What do you recommend for arborvitaes roots?** A: This product will work fine.
