what is the purpose of the backing plate?

Side mirror with backing plate is heated. Most heated mirrors are connected to a motorized element that controls the rear defroster of the car. When the rear defroster is turned on, the heating element in the mirror should be active. Keeping ice and fog off the side view mirrors can make it easier for drivers to see vehicles and other hazards behind them during inclement weather conditions.
