So much potential, but let down by poor software.
Since my partner and I have got a very elderly cat (Maurice, he's almost 19 years old), we're getting to that stage were we're constantly worrying about him, so thought that it would great if we could keep an eye on him while we're at work and otherwise out and about, so we decided to invest in an IP camera.I looked at several different types and didn't need something that had pan+tilt and all the bells and whistles, so I settled for this one as it looked totally perfect for the purpose of keeping an eye on the boy. Thanks as always to Amazon Prime, it arrived the day after ordering it.>>>>>>WHAT'S IN THE BOX?The camera arrives in a nice but rather plain box which, once opened, reveals the camera itself, its base, power adaptor, USB cable, a small pack of screws & rawl plugs and a set of instructions.>>>>>>SET UP WOESThe camera clips onto its base easily, but as soon as I started setting it up I realised that it things weren't quite as simple as the instructions suggested. It was easy enough to power it on install the 'COT Pro' software from the Google Play store to my android phone, but from that point onwards things got a trickier than they ought to have been. Now, just to make it clear, I am an IT professional - so things like this should be simple to me, right? Well, I was able to register my details with the camera app easily enough but it wasn't long before I encountered my first problem. Despite the instructions saying that the camera only functions on 2.4gHz WiFi connections, it would insist on defaulting to my router's 5gHz one and would not let me select the 2.4gHz one! In order to get around this I had to log into my router, disable its 5gHz SSID and reboot the camera, which is far more 'faff' than it should have been.It wasn't long before I encountered my second issue while setting it up - the instructions say that the camera should make a 'DI-DI-DI' sound shortly after startup, but in my experience it only make a 'clanging' sound upon startup, made a series of clicks and pops and then made an intermittent 'farting' sound. After multiple restarts of the camera and much gnashing of teeth it eventually connected to my WiFi and finally started working! After that, I had to go back into my router and turn my 5gHz SSID back on.>>>>>>GREAT FUNCTIONALITYOnce I'd got it all (finally) set up, I was very pleased to see that the camera is actually very impressively featured for the price and that the image quality from it is really rather good. It offers a multitude of functions, such as recording to Micro-SD, motion detection, alarms, etc. It can be set up to take still photos or record video when motion is detected and can send you an email or phone app notification too. The camera unit has a speaker on it, so you can communicate with anyone on the other end and unbelievably also has an impressive automatic night-vision mode so can be used in totally dark rooms.Tonight, while we were out of the house, it was a complete novelty to be able to connect to the camera remotely via 4G and see what Maurice was up to and offers a degree of peace of mind - even in the sense that this thing could potentially catch burglers in the act and things.>>>>>>HAMSTRUNG BY SOFTWAREAnd this little section (along with the pain that was involved in setting it up) is sadly the one that's responsible for me only awarding this webcam two stars - the 'CoT Pro' Android app is utterly, utterly awful. It hangs, crashes, often refuses to connect to the camera over 4G and consistently keeps displaying an array of nonsensical error messages. Thinking that this might have been something related to my (Android 7.1.2) phone, I tried it with my partner's phone as well as an older tablet running on Android 5 and it was just as bad. There's no way to be kind about it - it's a terrible app and is sadly the only way of interfacing with the webcam.I tried to access it via web browsers and even went as far as trying to get it to play with my NAS box's built-in IP camera software, but it point-blank refused to give them access to it, which would have redeemed this little webcam as the hardware is actually pretty good - but that's sadly not the case.>>>SUMMING UPI can't help but feel sad about my experience with this webcam. The hardware itself has so much potential as it's actually pretty good for the low cost, but the phone app (for Android at least) makes the camera almost unusable as it's so clunky and badly developed.Let's break it down to pros and cons+ Decent image quality+ Well featured- Fiendishly frustrating to set up- The 'CoT Pro' app is absolutely TERRIBLE- Poor placement of cable connector- Won't connect via web browsers or other third party apps

Great as a baby monitor
While some people will use this as a wireless security camera, which it certainly suits very well, I actually plan to use it as the baby monitor. It's compact, lightweight and the sleek design fits perfectly into the baby room decor. The setup is straightforward and it runs quietly, thus won't disturb babies from their gentle sleep.

good product with good price
Love this camera. I purchased this as a security camera, but it surprise me that it can also be used as a baby monitor. Now I use it to monitor an old house in an unsafe area. So I have an eye on my front porch since it has motion sensor.
