It seems there is a new version for this pump, which might be better than the one I received two years ago. During the first year, the pump worked great and you couldn't hear it from the pool. I noticed after the first year the pump got a little louder. I'm not sure what caused this. I have a fence that seperates the pump from the pool, and the pump is roughly 20 feet away. After 1.5 years, you could definately hear it from the pool. The scariest thing is how it stopped working. I went out to switch the pump on manually, and suddenly the pump motor emitted sparks, smoke and made several loud popping sounds. The electrical burn smell was terrible. I turned the pump off, thinking maybe the controller box had a short or overload. After running a few tests, the controller box and circuit breakers were fine. I flipped the pump switch back on, thinking maybe there was a lizard (I live in TX) or some other critter in the pump windings that created the short, but even more sparks, smoke and pops were emitted than before. This pump motor sat less than 6 inches from my house. If this pump would have caught fire during it's normal run time, and my house was made of something other than brick or motor, it could have caused a house fire. This pump should have some sort of safety breaker or switch that disables power from the pump when it overheats or has a short. I gave up on trying to figure out what happened to the pump and bought a different one that does have these safety features. My final thoughts... I would spend a few more dollars and buy a pump with more safety features built in. It is a standard type motor. It is NOT a variable speed pump, it is a 2 speed pump. When running full speed it can get hot enough to fry an egg. A true variable speed pump runs warm unless it is maxed out. I have been in the pool industry for 40 years so believe me when I say, any non variable speed pumps running on high speed get very hot. False advertising is used when calling this pump “variable”. It is a 2 speed pump. **Q: What size are the fittings? Outside, not inside the pipe as I can see it can take 2 ways to attach. I can't seem to find a union that fits.** A: It's a 2 inch union, we picked ours up at Lowe's, the part# on the label shows 511-14-2-2B and barcode # 8-2063397633-2 **Q: how and what controls the speed change? can I set the time for each speed to run(duration)?** A: If you have install it at the end where there is a round cap thats where you install the cables, there is a switch for speed, 1 or 2. So depends how big is your pool is the speed you decide. In my case I have a pretty big pool in speed 1 it won't work. So we put it in 2 and it works great. Now if you have a timer like me you only get to choose the time for the speed you choose. It will not work as setting for both speed.
