Taboo follows James Keziah Delaney (Tom Hardy), a man who has been to the ends of the earth and comes back irrevocably changed. Believed to be long dead, he returns home to London from Africa to inherit what is left of his father’s shipping empire and rebuild a life for himself. But his father’s legacy is a poisoned chalice, and with enemies lurking in every dark corner, James must navigate increasingly complex territories to avoid his own death sentence. Encircled by conspiracy, murder and betrayal, a dark family mystery unfolds in a combustible tale of love and treachery.

Excellence above excellence
Yes I bought this dvd some time ago - thank you for telling me that amazon. Before I bought it i watched it on bbc catchup - before they pulled the plug on me. I have watched the series on dvd several times and I will continue to do so. We are talking about a series of eight one hour episodes of a simply spectacular dramal. Well it has been created by some of the most talented people in the business. Ridley Scott, Tom Hardy and Stephen Knight billed as the main creators. And what a world they have created. Set in 1814 mainly in east London and the foreshore of the river Thames. How complete is the world they have given us. Mud, filth extreme violence. Everything is consistent. The lighting is amazing - every shot a Rembrandt - every word has meaning. What a world to escape into. The cruelty the lawlessness the conventions of two hundred years ago whether real or just created for this drama are second to none. Comprehensive, extremely complex - every time I watch it I find more meaning. Every character is there for a reason. Tom Hardy is of course unbelievably mesmorising as James Keziah Delaney - then there is David Hayman always brilliant in the roles he plays. the incredibly talented Jesse Buckley to my mind a younger female version of Tom Hardy in the roles I have watched her in. Taboo is uniquivecolly an absolutely stupendous production.

NO HOLDS BARRED IN THIS STRUGGLE FOR JUSTICE
1814. A shock at the funeral of mad Horace Delaney - sudden appearance of his notorious son James, presumed dead in Africa years ago. James inherits the little bequeathed, but that includes Nootka Sound - land sought by both Britain and America, potentially a lucrative gateway to trade with China. The East India Company (now all-powerful and corrupt) regards James as "merely a London mongrel", easily dealt with. How wrong they are!. Here is a man unlike any other - his past terrifying, beliefs and practices absorbed from the African tribe where he lived. Mystical powers? How else to account for the chanting and visions?Let battle commence. Many will die.Eight hour long episodes. Uncomfortable but gripping viewing. High production values. Here, painstakingly recreated, is a London as off-putting as can be - from its ludicrously bloated Prince Regent to urchins scavaging in Thames mud. Characterization is strong, even among people barely on screen - so many weary faces battered by life.Towering above all, Tom Hardy proves a compelling presence - his James not one to cross and preferably not even to meet. (Admittedly his powers of recovery stretch credibility - as when after an early near fatal stabbing and, much later, following twelve hours of intense torture.) Enemies abound, but Jonathan Pryce as the Company's wily Chairman is his main one here. Another great performance - it a particular pleasure to observe his complacency severely shaken, especially when rumours of his 1804 cover-up come to light....Much impresses on many levels, but at times strong stomachs are needed.(Interestingly the series evolved from a story written by Tom Hardy and his father. A sequel is planned.)

Terrific....
A great series, I really enjoyed it! And with some great acting, costumes and dialogue. I hope there will be a second series.

Great series, slightly poor picture quality, minus a star.
This series blew me away first time around so great to get it on DVD, just a shame Studio Canal`s transfer isn`t that good and contrasts a bit from the HD version shown on the BBC, but never mind, still a highly original, and graphic, mixture of fiction and fact set during a period with great change just around the corner, and FAR better than that rubbish pop video that is Peaky Blinders, roll on series two.
