In this Beginner’s Yoga DVD, Kino MacGregor introduces you to the practice of Ashtanga Yoga taught to her by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and R. Sharath Jois in Mysore, India. As a professional yoga teacher, the most frequent request Kino receives from her students is for a beginner’s programme. These progressive segments will help you build a strong foundation of yoga as you learn the postures at the perfect pace. The Tutorial is designed to teach you the very basics of yoga. Some key postures have been broken down on a step-by-step basis to help you learn them properly. Practice 1 is designed to introduce you to the sun salutations that will help you develop strength and flexibility while introducing you to the fundamentals of the flow of breath. Practices 2 is designed as the second stage of development once you have thoroughly learned Practice 1 and are ready to progress to the next level. This segment moves at a slightly faster tempo and integrates new poses to help you develop your practice further. Practice 3 is designed for when you have mastered Routine 1 & 2 and have built some endurance. This flowing segment really connects movement, breath and gaze as you focus on the spiritual aspects of yoga and begin to experience the transformation of your mind, body and soul. Practice 4 is designed to build strength from the core. The core plays a very important role in the postures of yoga. Having a strong core also trains the mind to be steady and calm. Practice 5 is designed to teach you how to meditate and relax. The Kino Interview answers the questions many students ask Kino about the complete journey of yoga such as what to eat or how to handle anger. Beginners moves, but still challenging
I know that this is a "Beginners" DVD, but I did find it harder than expected. I'd suggest that, if you are expecting a nice fluffy gentle workout, this is not it. I consider myself relatively fit and this makes me sweat, however I am a true beginner and I also find some of the postures (like downward dog, which is used liberally throughout the practices) challenging. If I was to level any criticism it would that it moves from one posture to another quite quickly at points and it can be hard to keep up if you are new to the poses, but, quite often you will find yourself in downward facing dog for a bit, so you get the opportunity to catch up. I would also expect my speed to improve over a period of time. The DVD is made up of an introductory chapter, showing some poses and explaining them, three twenty(ish) minute practice sessions of varying intensity, a core workout (which i confess I haven't done yet) and the thing that I really liked was that there is a final chapter which takes you through some meditation. I've only used this chapter a couple of times, but found it to work (where I have struggled with this before). The thing that I really like about this DVD, is that it is that the practices repeat a limited number of moves, but it is challenging enough that I feel that I am improving every day. I am into my second week and the postures are becoming easier and my flow is improving, although, I think that I am going to use this for a few more weeks before even attempting a class.Edit: I've just tried Tara Lee's elements : earth Foundation and it does move more gently and demonstrates more moves. So if you are looking for another recommendation, take a look at that.

Good but not quite what many might expect from "beginner" dvd
I'm not surprised this video won an award, because it is better than average, to say the least. But I'm surprised that it won for "best gentle workout" - as it really is still very very challenging, despite the "beginner" label. For those totally new to yoga -- as opposed to those totally new to Ashtanga Yoga, specifically -- this will in NO WAY be gentle, slow or an easy "beginner" level yoga practice -- just be forwarned. It is really good and you will still gain much benefit from it if you have patience with yourself and take it at your own pace and progress at your own pace, so as to avoid injury from trying to make your body do what it isn't ready to. But I do believe that a truly easy or "ease-ful" start to this style of yoga is just not possible without watering the practice down so much it just won't be Ashtanga practice. The Ashtanga practice is an acrobatic/athletic/physically demanding form -- it just is -- and if that is just not for you or your body, then this video, no matter how introductory, will never be for you. And even the wonderful Kino MacGregor's best efforts to simplify and make this accessible or easier for the unprepared newbie won't change that.So the above is why I knocked off one star -- the other star has to go because, damn damn damn, if the audio narration isn't beyond annoying! My partner came in the living room while I was practicing and heard her giving the cues and wondered aloud, "What is this? Yoga for manics?!" Because, seriously, seriously (did I mention 'seriously'?) she talks super fast throughout the entire dvd. Really, really, seriously fast. You will have to watch and listen sometime without trying to do the asanas/movements, just to make sure that you have a chance to hear and absorb all her verbal cues and tips for progressing in the practice. After a while, I'm guessing they expect you to turn off her audio cues and go it alone, because otherwise you will truly be driven batty by the chatter.

Yoga with a drill instructor
If you want your yoga with gentle sitar music & lots of slow relaxing 'take a moment to enjoy the sensations' commentary, do NOT buy this DVD. If you want a workout with constant instruction throughout and encouragement to hold on for a bit longer in a pose you'll be fine with this. I wouldn't say you'd want to jump straight in to it as it's fairly fast paced, I've been doing yoga at home off DVDs for a year now and started with Tara Lee's earth-air-fire 3 DVD set which I enjoy and still do (albeit working round some of the impossible poses) just fancied something a bit different (although all the moves in this DVD are on Tara Lees with a few minor variants). And yes some of the postures on this are impossible but then I think they are on all yoga DVDs unless you started young and have been doing it for 30 years. The criticisms about the moves being too dangerous and a recipe for injury are a bit unfair - if you've not got the common sense to stop before you hurt yourself then you're going to come unstuck with any workout tape. If you are a complete beginner then I think Tara Lee to start with, particularly the earth foundation DVD, and work at that before moving on.

Sehr empfehlenswert!
