Fine Stone
Fine stone great for a razor like edge, but I always finish off with a leather strop.

Essential Hone
Only two Lansky systems come with this 1000 grit hone, the Deluxe and the Professional, but frankly almost all of them need it. The Standard, Universal, and Diamond systems could all benefit greatly from this as the higher the grit the sharper the blade.I said almost all of the Lansky systems could use this, the exception is the Lansky Natural Arkansas System as it already contains a 1200 grit Natural Black Hard Arkansas Hone. Depending on what prices you find on the day you shop you might find it cheaper to get the Arkansas Black Hard Hone or to get this one, you need one or the other - not both.After you get this hone, get the 2000 grit Super Sapphire Hone, it takes the blade you sharpen with this hone and makes it even sharper still.You also need a strop. Lansky sell one, but you can buy them or make them yourself.

Well worth the money
It goes without saying I already had the basic Lansky set of diamond hones so this is used in conjunction with them. I want to get beyond the 'normal' edge that you get when sharpening a knife or buying one new. To me, a knife - almost any knife must be as sharp as possible, especially my penknife and my kitchen knives. You definitely don't want a cut from a blunt edge. This Ultra Fine Hone takes the edge into truly sharp territory and that's what I want. I then go on to a final edge - which is incredibly sharp - using the Super Sapphire hone. Cutting meat and vegetables is so easy now. Thinking of getting the Lansky Leather Stropping Hone for that final polish.........

I suppose you could use it as a flat stone, although you may be better off seeking a stone designed for such use.As far as \"how sharp does it get it?\", that all depends on your skill and persistence. This ultra-fine stone is used for final polish of an existing sharpened blade, and it does well at that. The next finer stone in the Lansky system is the Sapphire stone. That really puts a mirror polish on the blade."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Is there a hone that has a higher grit than the ultra fine or can I go straight from it to the stropping hone?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"I really don't know if Lansky sells a higher grit stone than the 1000 grit you are asking about. I go from the 1000 grit ultra fine straight to the strop and am very pleased. Perfect probably not but for the poor guy I get a nice mirror edge and sharp edge that is quite nice for the price."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Does anybody know the grit on this stone?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"I know it says 1000 but this is actually a finishing hone, it won't necesarilly make your knife any sharper. It will put a mirror polish on your blade (if you know what ur doing). I love it, this is probably the cheapest high quality finishing hone I've ever used. Try it, you won't be sorry."}}]}]}
