Does it need a receiver?

Hi. The charging base is the receiver. It's a good mouse. I use it all the time. It holds the charge very well - I keep forgetting to put the mouse on the base but it'll last easily 3 or 4 days without being charged. It also switches itself off after about 20 mins but as soon as you wiggle the mouse, it comes back on. Hope this helps.

Yes, it is a conventional 'red light' mouse. Personally, I really like this mouse and have used it daily since I first bought it.

how does the dock get its power? through a usb from the computer or a wall charger?

It plugs into the computer via a usb and when the mouse is placed on the dock it then charges, so when not in use it recharges the batteries, today it has not run out of power.
