## Description

Review: Good starter kit - Great kit that would make a brilliant gift for the right person. The wool fibres are lovely quality and up to weight. I found I could peel away the right widths of roving to do minimum drafting. They also smell nice and clean sheepy. The spindle is well made with a properly placed hook to allow the yarn to come out dead centre. I do get a bit of a wobble though, which has stopped me from moving on past the 'park and draft' stage. I haven't yet got to unsupported drop spinning. I have produced several balls of s twist yarn, because it seems to crochet better and I find it easier to flick the spindle right handed that way. As a beginner, I found the instructions adequate, but used the internet a bit for videos and tutorials.
Review: Good set - I haven't mastered this hand spinning stuff yet as I keep making my wool too thin, however this is a brilliant set. The spindle is well balanced and the wool is good quality. There is a strong smell that comes from the wool, I have no idea what it is but if you don't leave the box open in a well ventilated room for a few hours you can go a bit heady. I love it and I'm still practicing spinning, the rewarding feeling is well worth it.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What breed of sheep does the fibre come from? Product title says Finnish sheep but then material is listed below as merino...**
A: As my question has disappeared, in less than a week, I'll post my answer here what I found after some research. As far as I understand, all the wool is Finnsheep, which belongs to the group of Northern short-tailed primitive races of sheep.

There are three different genetic patterns with different sheep characteristics: Landrace, Aland sheep, and Kainuu Grey. The Kainuu Grey lambs are born black, but start to fade very early. Other colours are brown and black, and white which is the most common. In other words, none of the woo in the kit is dyed.

One company describes Finnsheep as similar to Blue Faced Leicester (also recommended to as a good beginner spinning wool - merino is not considered to be easy to learn with) but it classifies Blue Faced Leicester as fine 26n microns (fiber length 85 - 90mm), whereas Finnish wool is medium 28-30 microns (fiber length 80mm).

I did my best to give correct information but if I made a mistake, feel free to correct me.

**Q: Can you use this to spin dog fur?**
A: You can certainly use it to learn to spin with sheep wool, but once you know the basics of spinning you would want to move up to a lighter-weight spindle, or even to a wheel.
Spinning dog fur requires considerably more skill than spinning sheep wool - that's just one reason we overwhelmingly use sheep wool!
Spinning dog fur - if you want to use it for knitting, later -is best done by an experienced spinner with a wheel and blending apparatus, as you will get a much better and more useable result if the dog fur is blended with a proportion of sheep wool.

**Q: how heavy is the drop spindle?**
A: The spindle is a good weight for a beginner - around 50- 60gms - well balanced and with a good long duration of spin. TBH it's a bit heavy for me now, spinning from fine, soft, short-staple fibres, five years on, but I still use it regularly for plying and it's the spindle Intake out if anyone wants to 'have a go'.

**Q: How long is this spindle please.**
A: Hi,

Thanks for enquiry. We make our spindles 12" long.

Regards, Roger

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Lovely wool and colours
*by N***A on 13 November 2021*

I got this starter kit as a Christmas present but managed to lose it, so I bought it again. I still haven't found the original, so not being able to compare side to side but from memory, the wool in my new order is better quality and colours are more even... and I have a feeling that the first kit also had less wool. I have never done any spinning before so I took my kit to spinners meeting and everyone said how nice the wool is and they demanded to know what breed was used. I didn't read the instructions as I prefer watching videos and I was lucky enough to get help from experienced spinners: I don't know if this TIP I was given by them is included in the booklet: always spin clockwise. This is because the direction of the scales helps the fibers to lock together more firmly and make stronger yarn. I was lead to believe that a spindle without a notch is more difficult but I did not find it a problem at all - maybe it is the case with more slippery yarns. The spindle is also well-balanced and spins without any wobble even in my hands. I have also ordered a spindle with a notch so it will be interesting to see if it makes any difference. Overall, I am very pleased with this as a beginner kit. There are videos online on how to get started but there are people who haven't discovered YouTube, so I think the instructions could benefit from a couple of images to help them out. EDIT: after spinning the first lot, I found that the disk has come loose. Not only it could fall off but more experienced spinners in a guild meeting agreed that it makes spinning the spindle more difficult, at least until I have enough yarn on the spindle to fix it in place. I would have contacted the seller for advice but Amazon seems to have taken that feature off.
