Hitchcock History
I have seen all the Hitchcock classic movies many times before over the years but thought it worthwhile to buy this boxed DVD set containing the most acclaimed and succesful of his films. I watched them one by one by one over a period of time and realised just how old and dated they really are with studio sets and actors in front of filmed background locations. Modern films of today are far more superior in quality and locations but one has to put oneself in the context of these films being made at the time they were made. For instance, I remember as a child my mother coming home having seen 'The Birds' in the early 60's describing to me how frightening the film had been when the birds attacked. Watch it now and one can see how bad the birds, being super-imposed on to the film, really are by today's standards. BUT what really stands out, and what can never be taken away from the master, is the way in which Hitchcock used the camera in close up shots. By way of example the famous 'Psycho' bath/shower scene where a plug hole is filmed. For anybody who has never experienced these classic movies I would reccommend this set to them in order to see what a true master of film Hitcock was in his day. To people like me who know the films inside out, it is good DVD collection to have, if only to remind ourselves of what used to 'thrill' us in our younger days.

Mein erster Alfred Hitchcock

Fantastic Set
I bought this boxed selection of 14 Hitchcock DVD's as a Christmas present for my husband. Luckily he's as keen on Hitchcock movies as myself!! I gather Hitchcock produced over 50 films in his time, so this selection could be classed as a mere 'drop-in-the-ocean'? Regardless, it's a good 'drop' to start off your collection with. It's amazing how 'simple' these films are - or at least appear to be - but just how captivating too. The amount of suspense I felt during the final stages of Rear Window with James Stewart and Grace Kelly (an unusual pairing in some respects but one that worked so well) had me sitting on the edge of my seat. Marnie, was another that had me guessing, Hichcock's psychological undercurrents intrigued me as did seeing Sean Connery in his smouldering youth - what a sexy guy....This selection covers a cross-section of Hitchcock's career, with some in black and white, and with other more well-known films such as 'The Birds' and 'Psycho' to keep you interested. On the whole we were enthralled and looked forward to watching our next 'instalment'. However, on two occasions we felt the films a little 'slow', although they did not spoil our viewing unduly but spurred us on to the next film.So I would say it's well worth purchasing this set, and you may - like us - want to purchase the whole collection.

Every one a gem
The genius that was Alfred Hitchcock made many, many films - not all of them brilliant - but this is as good a cross section as you can find. Any collection that contains "Psycho", "The Birds", "Marnie", Rear Window" and on and on cannot in any shape or form be called wanting. The quality of the transfers is not Blu-Ray but these films were made during the 50's and 60's - so what do you expect! The best - it must be "The Birds". The worst - "Torn Curtain" only because of Julie Andrews dreadful acting. The major omission - "North by Northwest". If you are in any way an admirer of Hitchcock, buy this - you will not be disappointed.

Hitchcock 14 Disc Box Set - Vertigo/ The Birds/ Rear Window/ Marnie/ Frenzy/ Topaz/ The Trouble With Harry/ Torn Curtain/ Psycho
Of course you can pick holes in the films selected for this box set as it doesn't include all Hitchcock's best known films but it doesn't pretend to. Forget what's good and what's bad this is fourteen Hitchcock films for currently very little money and which takes very little space on the shelf. It's a basic boxset but there should be a film in here that everyone could enjoy. Anybody who wants more will doubtless not be impressed with the packaging and slimline cases but if you just want to overdose on some good and some classic Hitchcock this is not a bad way to start.

Quantity and quality
I bought this boxset having seen a few of Hitchcock's earlier British films, and not having a huge amount of knowledge of his films. The pure variation of the films contained within make the collection enjoyable, and there is a real range of drama, terror and comedy. If you are not much of a Hitchcock fan, or want to discover more about the enigma, the set is well worth buying, and there is guaranteed to be something in the films for every type of film fan.The boxset is great value for money too, due to the quantity of films and the fact that every one has extras.

Hitchcock 14 Disc Box Set
Rather plain packaging doesn't thrill but the contents are frankly amazing for the price! Excellent quality, shame there's no North by Northwest or To Catch a Thief but the 'Making of' and other extras more than compensate. Real fans will enjoy the obscure early works seldom seen even on satelite tv. Ration yourself and enjoy the lighter comedic pieces in between the high drama and suspense...so nice to think you can now watch again and again...students of social history will have a ball - some of the dialogue and manners seem so camp from a 21stC viewpoint. Priceless! Would highly recommend.

Yes, this only works for region 2 but you can pretty much watch them on your computer (download the VLC player.) I even had a spare HDMI cable so I was able to hook my laptop or PC to our TV so I was able to watch it there. It is also possible to override your DVD' settings by pressing a code on your remote but you'd have to check that on the internet. Anyway, this was a bargain buy for me and I pretty much watched most of the movies on this collection with no issues. It's not heavy on special features but I bought this quite cheap so I can't complain (I got this for only 18 bucks!!!) I would take out a star from this though because it seems to be already outclassed by the other collections that are recently being put out, unless you were lucky like me who got this for such a low price.
