As others have already pointed out connecting your printer's USB 2.0 cable to your laptop's USB 3.0 cable should work. But that is sometimes only theory. I have had cases where connecting a USB 3.0 device with the USB 3.0 cable that came with it to any USB 3.0 port would not work, but if I used another USB 3.0 cable it always worked.What I would suggest first is to try a different USB 2.0 cable if you have one. Do other USB 2.0 devices (e.g. a USB stick) work on your USB 3.0 ports? If that is the case you could try a USB 2.0 extension cable first (not USB 3.0). This StarTech USB 3.0 cable would be my third choice. Although (again) in theory it should not make a difference I have found adding an extension cable can make a difference with issues like yours. I suspect your problem has to do with the USB 2.0 plug not making proper contact with the USB 3.0 connector. Have you tried connecting the printer to a different computer (if you have one available) and does that work?
