Barbarosa (Willie Nelson), a gnarly ex-Texas Ranger turned bandit, lives by his wits and his prowess with a gun. Prowling the lonesome deserts of the Southwest, the wily fugitive meets Karl (Gary Busey), a young, eager farmhand out of his element, to run after accidentally killing his brother-in-law. Together, the outlaw and outcast outwit their bloodthirsty pursuers in this legendary story of betrayal, misunderstanding, honor and dignity. Brought vividly to the screen by director Fred Schepisi (Roxanne, Six Degrees of Separation and I.Q.).Bonus Features: Interviews with the director and supporting actors

but as usual Disappointed by Hollywood business suits
Again, another BUTCHERED version with the KEY scene where Eduardo tells Don Broiglio that he has killed Barbarosa and Don Broioglio tells him that the vendetta with Barbarosa is what lifted the family up from being just goat herders to a highly respected family and what will become of the family now ? Will they go back to being goat herders with out any family pride with out a nemesis to keep them strong and give them a reputation to live up to ! ! ! 3 minutes that explain the whole basis for the vendetta and the movie and that's what some bean counter or exec with a title, who obviously NEVER watched the complete film decides to cut.. I had hoped the Blu-Ray version would be the un cut movie, but as usual Disappointed by Hollywood business suits. AGAIN ! ! !.. .

You Can't Go Wrong With Willie Nelson, Pre-Crazy Busey and Texas!
An under-rated relatively unknown movie that has been on constant rotation in my family since it was released on VHS. Where other westerns wow you with nudity, excessive gunfights and explicative filled dialog Barbarosa just tells a good story. Gritty and realistic the film perfectly captures a man's reluctant acceptance as a living legend and his interaction with a farmer who has been dealt a poor hand in life. The on location filming perfectly captures the feel of Texas and is just as much a character in the film as the actors. That is why I was thankful when the blu ray edition was presented in widescreen and corrected the full screen release that had been running around since the 80s. Nelson and Busey are perfectly cast and I could honestly not see anyone else filling these roles. This is a great film that deserves to be added to any western collection.

There Is Worse
Review of "Barbarosa", wide screen, Amazon Prime streaming version --On the five star scale of mindless dreck this rates about a three. A dumb, wandering plot awash in dumb dialog and executed by even dumber acting from the major players. The only interesting elements are the background bit actors playing barflies, whores, robber clans, goat herders, cowboys, plain honest folks and such.In this double vendetta (two for the price of one!) buddy film I expected the usual stultifying performance from Willie Nelson (being stoned 24/7 is probably not an accepted school of acting) but Gary Busey should have been embarrassed. Oh well, a paying gig is a paying gig and both Nelson and Busey are named as co-producers. Don't look a gift oater in the mouth if it pays the rent.Plot Summary --Aging armadillo eating, foul-mouthed, low-life, dirt-bag, robber/murderer/thief Barbarosa (Willie Nelson) teams up with young, naive accidental killer jackass Karl Westover (Gary Busey). What Barbarosa lacks in character he does not make up in personality and Karl is just plain annoying. Together they stumble about for 90 minutes robbing, killing, consuming armadillos, spouting clichés that pass as wisdom, avoiding the law and dodging angry folks who want to see these two dorks dead. And then there is the cringe inducing comedy routines that fall flat. Karl, who does have a few socially redeeming qualities, learns about life from an older mentor who has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.Reviewer LG Writer opined that "Barbarosa" was "One of the best overlooked westerns of the last 20 years." I would say it is best overlooked, but you could do worse. "Barbarosa" rates 100% on the Rotten Tomatoes "TOMATOMETER." Go figure.

Very, very good movie
Husband and I loved this movie. I've seen it a few times over the years but this was his first time. Great cast. Willie Nelson and Gary Busey were perfect.

Good not great
Solid movie, a very young Busey and Willie Nelson both perform very well. It would have worked better if Barbarosa himself was a more compelling bandit, they try to make him so lovable and soft hearted that it turns the main character and his arc into more a spoof of a bandit, than an actual bandit, and the tone of the movie suffers because of this. And the German family is an absurdity, three full grown men in the American West on a farm, and yet none of them can shoot worth a damn, the brothers would fit right in in a Laurel and Hardy skit. They should have taken this movie in the direction of Unforgiven. It's like they were afraid to take it too serious, or maybe it needed to be rated PG. Still, you can't fault the acting, Busey and Nelson save what could have been horrible in less capable hands. I saw this movie when it came out in 1982 in the theatre when i was 10 with my dad an sister . I'm watching it again here in 2019 out of nostalgia, but it will probably be for the last time. Once every 30-40 years is enough for this movie.

Good story
Good movie; quality was fine; enjoyed the separate actor/actress interviews as well. You have to watch several scenes multiple times to get the nuances of the story, but all-in-all, a good movie.
