Civil engineering produces the structures of all human settlements worldwide and is a vital discipline for many aspects modern life, underlying housing, transport, and our major areas and buildings related to work, study, and leisure. In this Very Short Introduction , David Muir Wood demonstrates the nature and importance of civil engineering not only in the history of civilization and urbanization, but its range of facets today, and its challenges for the future. Beginning with the challenge of creating a settlement on a deserted island, which sets out the problems that civil engineers need to solve, he looks at the social and environmental considerations as well as the science, technology, and craft of building bridges, tunnels, houses, and areas of recreation. He highlights the lives of some major civil engineers, including Brunel and Bazalgette, considers the challenges of managing water and energy, and looks at our increasing sensitivity to building and the environment. Broad-sweeping coverage of the history, business aspects, and the field's various branches
When I was signing up for college, I had never heard of civil engineering. At school, I learned that it is the people who set up the roads. I didn't have time during school to really investigate it. Now that I've graduated, I have time to read a couple hundred pages introducing the main concepts. This book fills that role *admirably*. I loved its broad-sweeping coverage of the history, business aspects, and the field's various branches. I found myself on pleasant Wikipedia detours to go deeper into subjects I was interested in (e.g. pumps, wow cool). I would have liked more technical and practical details about how to *do* civil engineering in the modern day, but I guess I'll need a real textbook for that material.

Bought as a gift so can't really comment for a young engineering student. So, can't really give a thumbs up or down.

This is an excellent balanced presentation.
I enjoyed the historical examples and the historical prospective in this readable book. There is a lot more to engineering than math.
