The Nashville duo Hammock -- celebrated by Pitchfork, NPR, the BBC, The Atlantic, and Ricky Gervais -- returns on August 25 with Mysterium, the band's eighth album since its founding in 2003.Composed as a memorial to Clark Kern, a son-like figure to Hammock co-founder Marc Byrd who died in 2016 from the tumor strain NF2, Mysterium merges modern classical, ambient, and choral music, and it's of a piece with recent records by Max Richter and Jóhann Jóhannsson. The gorgeous, hour-long collection features contributions from the Berlin mix engineer Francesco Donadello (Winged Victory for the Sullen, Ólafur Arnalds), Peter Katis (The National, Jónsi, Interpol), and the Hamburg orchestrator Roman Vinuesa ("Iris," "Umrika"), who transcribed scores for the Budapest Art Choir.

To chill your aching heart
Not sure I've ever heard an album of ambient post-rock but it is really quite special.

Simply Exquisite
A minute into 'Now and Not Yet', the opening piece on Hammock's new album 'Mysterium' andI half-expected to encounter Glynis Johns chiming in with a heart-rending account of StephenSondheim's 'Send In The Clowns' from the 1973 musical 'A Little Night Music'. She doesn't but....Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson have been doing what they do and doing it well for a dozenyears since their 2005 debut 'Kenotic'. Quasi-ambient poetic soundscapes; high on lush texturesand plenty of room for our inner ears and eyes to flex their their meditative muscles. In a Worldgone mad I'm perfectly happy that this should continue to be the case. We all need room to breathe. There is much that is lovely in these eleven fresh inventions. Dive right on in and feel the gentle force.Top tracks : 'Think Of Beauty Burn', with its elegiac strings, piano and floating disembodied voices;'Remember Our Bewildered Son', a luminous threnody full of keening melodic pulses which generatean almost overwhelming emotional impact and 'Numinous', a shimmering paean to the stars and beyond.A simply exquisite collection.
