Review: Good backpacking stove, even better as a brew kit. - Not the lightest cooking system on the market but certainly one of the most versatile. I went with the Coleman for two reasons: 1) I liked the remote gas cylinder design which gives a much lower centre of gravity and more stability 2) Slightly larger capacity than most of its rivals, which suits my purposes. I do use this to backpack with, mostly for day trips but where this really excels for me over the Jet Boil or Alpkit rivals is that it's stability and bigger capacity mean I can also use it as a kettle for brewing up out the back of my day van. It's so much more compact than lugging about an Uno stove and separate kettle and it boils an awful lot quicker, even in high winds. It pours nicely and the neoprene sleeve does a good job of insulating you from the heat. Unusually for this type of stove it has a decent range of heat too so you can actually simmer with it. My only gripe is the stupid cloth that Coleman supplies to wrap the burner in, it's fiddly and not fit for purpose. They should have supplied a bag instead which would have cost just pennies extra but that's a minor irritation.

It heated a half litre of water in about 4 minutes and cooked a wet ration pack in around 10 minutes. The pot isn't as compact as some similar sized pots but fit into my backpack fine. The only criticism I have is that the cloth isn't big enough to properly wrap the stove up after use and the pot is about 2mm too short to fit a canister and the stove in the pot at the same time. You can force the lid on with them both in but it does deform so I wouldn't recommend it.

Great piece of kit, boils quickly and has enough control to warm sachet meals without burning g them up the bottom of the cup.
