Simple buttons and a switch on the back are all you need to master. They work great both counting up or down. A small stand flips out if you want to stand them up. There is also a strong magnet on the back. The alarm is loud enough to get your attention but not so loud as to be startling. Had them for several months now and have not had to change the battery yet, even though they have been used almost daily. It comes with a triple A battery which is very nice from the sellers part. A magnet on the back and a platform to hold it up. It has two options to turn it on, with and without sound. It can count up as a stopwatch and down as a timer. In sound mode the timer will go off and make noise, very helpful. Turning the sound off will announce the timer going off through red light flashes (next to the start button). You can clear the time by holding onto both buttons.
