The Hornby Book of Scenic Railway Modelling
I'm keen to get back into modelling now that my son is of an age to appreciate it. Back in the day my bro and I had trainsets, but never did much around the 'scenic' part, beyond a simple station platform. This book covers setting up your layout in a sensible order. I feel more inspired to actually try out some scenic modelling - ballasting, setting up back scene etc.One of the best parts is towards the back where there are some little projects detailed, such as creating a small oil depot, a loading ramp for a flatbed wagon, an elevated signal box etc. I'm pretty sure I will try at least one of these. Also, note that while this is of course pro-Hornby, it does mention other suppliers where appropriate.

Lonely Planet Guide to a Small World of Your Own Pt2
I bought this and the companion title The Hornby Book of Model Railways at the same time. Both cover much common ground although the latter is more of getting started guide and probably bests read first. This title focuses more on the landscape, scenery aspect of the hobby.Very nicely printed and well illustrated, this is an inspirational (or depressing depending on the space/time/budget/modelling skill you have) reinforcement once you start down the path of model railway building, moving from a train set to a model of a railway, as it were. Clearly sponsored and endorsed by Hornby (many of the illustrations are straight from the catalogue) but not an extended advert for them.

Good overview of modelling techniques
This is very much an overview of railway modelling techniques and does not go into a huge amount of detail, but serves as a useful introduction to those getting into modelling. It very much plugs the Hornby range of modelling products, but that's only to be expected from a Hornby branded book! There is reference to other manufacturers as well.As an overview, however, it is fairly light on detail and you would need to read further for more specific advice on particularly the trickier techniques. Nevertheless it is well illustrated and provides good inspiration as to the sort of results you can aim for.
