Product Description This makes a traditional brown loaf, this flour is produced in a similar way to making the unbleached white with a slightly coarser sifting to produce a light wholemeal flour - ideal for bread, rolls and bara brith.About the MillMilling is the one of the oldest and most necessary craft's. At Bacheldre Watermill we use a blend of traditional skills and equipment with modern machinery to create a range of award winning Organic flours. The grain is first cleaned in our refurbished 'Eureka scouring and separating machine' dating back to the late 1800's before it goes to the hopper above the stone. The Millers' TaleWhen Matt and Anne Scott first visited Bacheldre Watermill, in the beautiful Welsh Marches, it was love at first sight: "We just knew this was the place for us", explains Matt. Having decided to start a new business in the country, the Scotts had planned to work in tourism, and Bacheldre was being sold as a campsite that just happened to have a watermill attached."There's been a mill here since 1575, and the idea of keeping that heritage going really appealed to us. The mill was a working museum when we first came across it but was only grinding around a tonne of grain a month. We went into it as complete novices, but learnt quickly. We have increased production as the business has gone from strength to strength, and we have won many awards for the quality of our flour, our packaging and our business. Our success is really down to our attention to detail and the traditional methods we employ for our milling, and also the way we pack it. By stone grinding the flour we retain all the natural goodness and flavours of the wheat germ. Our range of bread, home baking and speciality flours are a must for the home kitchen through to Michelin star restaurants."There has been a water mill at Bacheldre since 1575 and the current building was built in 1747. The mill was built to service the 500 acre estate of 'Crow Wood' including the hamlet of Bacheldre, it has been mainly used during the winter months, due to the supply of water to the mill, and for such a small estate only a small amount of feed and flour was required.Today we have grown the business and although we do use motors to turn our stone's, this has been done sympathetically to match the speed that the water wheel turns the stones, we can mill longer in the day, but not faster. We use a green energy supply and we are now working on installing an electric generator to the waterwheel to use the water to create some of the electric required. Great flour but beware Amazon Warehouse
This is terrific flour. Use it in place of white and you're unlikely to notice the difference and yet it should be better for you.I make all sorts of bread and buns with it, also cakes, puddings and more, even though it's strong, when not using wholemeal. I rarely buy white flour any more.So why only three stars? I made the mistake of ordering my latest batch from Amazon Warehouse. The best-before date is only two weeks away and there's no warning of that before buying. I've asked them to improve the description but whether they will remains to be seen.

Arrived with a use by date of only 3 months - Useless when buying in bulk!!
I usually like this flour and have ordered it many times in the past without a problem. I order this flour along with other flours from the same company such as the Rye, White, Wholemeal & Spelt. I tend to blend all these flours to make various types of bread, but as I only bake bread for my own family's consumption, it can take approx. 6 months to use it all up (1 box of each of the above flours is 5 boxes of flour, a total of 20 bags of flour). This is not usually a problem as the use by date is normally at least 10 months away however on this occasion the Bacheldre Watermill Organic Stoneground Strong Brown Flour arrived with a use by date of only 3 months away which is useless and clearly not at all fresh which is necessary for making good bread, as indicated in the River Cottage Bread Book.I will not be risk buying this flour or any other perishable goods from Amazon again due to this. Instead I've found a local mill here in Shrewsbury that produces their own organic stone milled flour so will buy this instead from now on. Buying directly from the mill means I know its as fresh as can be and it happens to be better value for money too, bonus.

Light brown
Using a bread machine and "white" recipe, this makes a nice loaf but is only a bit more textured and coloured than white really. I'd call it a light brown flour, and although I'm happy with the bread produced, it isn't as tasty as say a 30% wholemeal.

Great flour
I was keen to try a traditionally milled flour and these seem to be the most affordable ones I could find online. I have only made one bread with it so far, using my bread machine for the mixing and proving and finishing it in the oven as I prefer the denser crustier result. I can say that there is definitely a difference in texture and taste to your standard bread flours. This flour makes amazing bread. I am so pleased I found this and will definitely order more and also try different flours.

Very good flour
I have become a bread machine addict and now only buy shop bread in emergencies. Having worked my way through the flours available in the supermarkets and various other brands found at my local garden centre. I decided to go for this four pack as our 'regular' bread as it works out as a good price considering the quality. The bread that I have made from it has been really excellent, I have found that you really shouldn't rush it as on the short(2hr) cycle it doesn't rise so, still v nice but on the longer (4hr) it is amazing.
