Patterns of Fashion 4: The cut and construction of linen shirts, smocks, neckwear, headwear and accessories for men and women c. 1540 - 1660

I have been looking at this book for ages wondering if it would be of interest to me, that's the problem with not being able to look inside. Now I have finally bought it and I'm delighted. It's got so much information and is absolutely fascinating. I'm sure I'll be reading it from cover to cover. And of course I'll be wanting the others in the series too.

Outstanding book. The first half goes through existing garments, with photographs of the costume and any details, then the second half has the patterns for these garments on an imperial grid. The patterns are of the garment as seen, so to make to fit, adjustments will have to be made. There is also a section all about linen work and how to starch ruffs. So much information, this book will have everything you need to know about linen garments in the period mentioned.

The Janet Arnold books are a great resource for anyone into the history of costume and costume making. I bought this book for myself a while ago and have made many variations and adaptations of the ruff patterns. It has been my present of choice for friends who work as makers for the theatre, opera and film. The photographs of actual shirts and accessories worn at the time are very useful for getting a sense of the fabrics and materials used. A very inspiring book , I only wish it came in hardback form as mine is looking very dog-eared.

Actually that is not true. If you are buying this book, it is because you really do want to know just what kinds of linen were used to make a ruff, exactly how the seams are constructed in a shirt.. You are, in fact, a said costume geek like me and you will love this, as much as you loved all her other books. Nothing to criticise!

So glad I found it! Currently making a shirt for my husband to wear.

I don't know how any historical sewer lives without these books! Purchased for help measuring up a 17th century shirt.

Amazing book! Absolutely worth the money, it was wonderfully packaged and secure, and every page will help unmeasurably with my uni work.

I first saw a copy of this series of books back in the early 1980's studying Theatre Design. They are a fantastic source of information about period styles and lines with examples of original patterns. Put together by a costume designer, I think they are a must have for people interested in costume and history.

Wer sich für die Mode in der Renaissance interessiert, wird von diesem Buch gut informiert. Von der Autorin sehr gut recherchiert und gestaltet, kann man die Bauweise der " Mühlsteinkragen " erfahren. Schnitte und Erklärungen, Gemälde und Zeichnungen machen das Buch zu einer Freude beim Durchblättern. Es gibt " handgeschriebene " Notizen und Bemerkungen. Wie der Titel schon verrät, ist das Buch auf Englisch verfasst, die Bebilderung ist aber sehr genau und erklärt sich fast von selbst.

Janet Arnold è per una costumista emergente come me un'importante punto di riferimento. Collezione indispensabile per i professionisti del settore. Libri in ottime condizioni e indicazioni perfette, questo sugli accessori in particolare ha dei riferimenti visivi molto interessanti a dipinti e fotografie che aiutano a comprendere ancor meglio il significato e la struttura degli accessori delle varie epoche.

wieder ein tolles aufwändiges Kostümbuch.Nähen werde ich danach wohl nicht direkt denn das erfordert doch viel Erfahrung, aber für Anregungen wie es aussehen sollte etc. einfach nur genial

Io ho preso i numeri 1-2-3 e 4 e sono tutti strepitosi, utilissimi che pochi volesse fare ricostruzioni storiche o anche chi fosse solo interessato a scoprire come erano fatti gli abiti dell'epoca nel dettaglio

Come tutta la linea,suggeritissimo! Bei disegni dettagliati,foto,molte spiegazioni. Vista la complessità della manifattura dei capi,non certo consigliato per chi è alle prime armi.

Ottimo libro con illustrazione in bianco e nero grafiche molto chiarificatrici altamente professionali

Interessante corredato di ottimi disegni e foto. Spiegato in ogni piccolo particolare anche se in inglese. Nel complesso molto bello.

Mi mancava solo questo . Consiglio di prendere tutti e 4 i libri se si vuole un buon quadro sui costumi storici e la loro fattura.

Yet again, another wonderful book by Janet Arnold. I have all four in this series and they are some of my most treasured books on antique fashion! A must have for all who sew or think of sewing their own antique style costumes. A real treasure.
