This can be prevented by regular use rather than popping the lid up and down and making sure the inserts pushed down the furthest it will go. This lighter comes with a flint and wick installed, these will last a few months depending on use. Make sure you buy some lighter fluid though. Normal lighter fluid makes the zippo smell a bit so I bough regular fluid and have had no problem. It does not eliminate the smell but it just makes it smell less and give you a better flame and less evaporation. If you are new to zippos then this one is a great starter and looks perfect.
