The whispersync function makes sure that the audio starts at the point I stopped reading on the kindle device **Q: Can you turn the backlight off?** A: I want to give a full and clear answer to this question because there's a lot of confusion in the answers. I've just bought (May 2018) a Paperwhite and this is what I found. You CANNOT completely turn off the light while reading. However, at its lowest level it's so dim you can only see it in a dark room. You won't notice it at all otherwise, so it's not a distraction. The light DOES however turn off when the Paperwhite is asleep, so you don't need to worry about it being on all the time. When I learnt the light may not turn off I thought it would be problematic, but it's not at all.
