Wow, I had read lots of reviews and anecdotes in the past about this storyline, and I have to admit, it does not disappoint. It is so atmospheric even as I was reading it at times you feel the claustrophobia of being trapped under the earth. One thing that has puzzled me so far - why hasn't the JLA come to help, especially Superman?! If there is one storyline a Batfan needs to read, it's Road to No Mans Land and the following volumes.

Batman: Aftershock, not Road to No Mans Land.
Continuing on from Batman: Cataclysm, this graphic novel doesn't actually collect any of the Road to No Mans Land issues, this book collects Batman: Aftershock, which confuses me as to why they decided to go with naming after the saga that precedes this one, oh well i suppose at least we are getting the proper Road to No Mans Land in volume two so its no biggie. This book has an extremely dark, sorrowful feel right from the outset, with the city in shreds, an indiscriminate death toll in the thousands and Batman literally helpless, there's very little have a few laughs about. With Aftershock collecting a variety of stories around the city, we get to see how Gotham is dealing with the immediate after effects of the earthquake, as people make their decisions whether its time to abandon the city, Gothams elite have a decision of their own to make, is Gotham actually capable of coming back from an incident this huge, and will anyone even support its recuperation, especially when there's no longer profit to made. This book not only deals with the immediate after effect of Cataclysm but the seeds for Road to No Mans Land is also planted here, we begin to see the realisation that Batman isn't whos needed in this city shattering eventuality, and slowly Bruce Wayne comes to realise that the city needs him and not the Bat. But can Bruce Wayne achieve what the Batman cannot? you'll have to wait and see in the next volume.
