The carbide blades provide quick edge setting capability for dull or damaged knives, blades are designed for use on straight edges only. Ceramic stones provide a smooth, polished edge for already sharp knives and can be used on serrated or standard blades. Both the carbide blades and ceramic stones are reversible and replaceable for extended sharpening life. The Pocket Pal measures 3-1/2 inches long and 1 inch wide, and it weights just 1 ounce. Always clean your sharpener with a damp cloth after use and towel dry. Do not rinse with water. Insert knife blade into the V-shaped slots at a 90-degree angle to the sharpening blades or stones. 2. Pull the knife blade straight back towards you while applying light pressure. 3. Repeat this action until blade is sharp. Tapered Diamond Rod: Flat Edges 1. Always hold the unit with the rod facing down. Place heel of the blade on the diamond rod closest to the unit. 2. Hold blade at a 23-degree angle to the rod. 3. While applying light pressure, push the knife away from you towards the end of the rod. Draw knife down so that the tip of the blade comes off the end of the rod. Repeat this action until blade is sharp. 4. For the other side of the blade, you will need to switch hands holding the sharpener and the knife and repeat step 1 through 3. Tapered Diamond Rod: Serrated Edges 1. Only sharpen the side of your knife edge with the serrations. 2. Hold rod at 23-degree angle to the blade and move it back and forth through each serration until sharp.

Review: Perfect tool for harpening knives. - Works perfectly, so far sharpened three knives since I have had it and it is perfect at doing the job.
Review: Nice little sharpener - This thing seems a bit cheap feeling at first glance, however using it, it feels well made, and does an excellent job of removing a dull edge and bringing a knife back to life. Very handy little thing to have and takes up virtually no space at all.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: is this any good for "Victorinox Swiss Army Huntsman" ive never sharpened mine and want the same edge on the blade**
A: I used the Smiths Pocket Pal on my Swiss Army knife and it sharpened the blades up a treat, even the saw blade.

**Q: Does this sharpen ceramic knives?**
A: Hi Charles, I'm afraid i can't answer that since i don't own any. I hear the ceramic knives are brilliant though. But more on the sharpener.... I've had some success with it since my last review ... but you really have to get the angle just right. The Tapered Round Diamond Coated Rod works a charm though. By the way i keep mine next to a sharpening block in my Maxpedition Fatty. Peace.

**Q: Do you think this would sharpen bigger tools such as a hatchet? thanks**
A: No, its only a small sharpener, Ideal for pen knifes.

**Q: Would this be a good sharpener for cuticle nippers?**
A: The prong sharpener would be ok on small blades, but the V shaped sharpener is only for use on a thin straight edge.
If the nippers are hardened steel, you will have your work cut out trying to sharpen them. The prong is not the best tool to keep an edge on a blade, but may help.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Not bad
*by T***Y on 22 March 2014*

I have to say that when it comes to sharpening knives I just don't have the knack for it. I even have a professional butchers steel for sharpening kitchen knives. I look pretty good swishing the blade up and down the steel, but the knife always remains as blunt as a butter knife. So if you are using my review as a guide as to buy this sharpener or not, bear in mind my lack of skills for sharpening a knife. I have tried a few stones and sharpeners in my time and they give mixed results. This one is no different, for someone who hasn't got a clue, it does a reasonable job of removing nicks in the blade and honing it back to something that can make a reasonable cut. I gather that by the size of this it is mostly for pocket knives more than keeping a professional set of cookware knives in working order. I have used it on a few occasions for a kitchen knife and it has kept it sharp enough to prepare veggies and slice up the Sunday roast - yes I am that 1 knife does all person. I have used it mainly for keeping a range of pocket knives in a reasonable condition. I can't say I have been able to get the blades back to their factory shipped, sharp enough to shave with condition, but that could be my fault. That being said this is easy to use and can recover a blade as long as it is not too badly blunted. The instructions are simple enough. a few draws through on carbide to rough sharpen and then finish of with the ceramic. The spike is for serrated blades which I found was OK for cleaning up a few blemishes, but again due to my lack of skills I was unable to get a particularly razor sharp finish, but it was good enough for what I needed. This isn't one of the best quality build sharpeners I have seen, but it isn't bad given the current price tag of under 10GBP.
