How can it claim to measure water temp inside an aquarium without touching the water? Seems utterly useless.

The back of these thermometers is black so it absorbs the infra red radiation from the water through the glass into the sensor of the thermometer. I have got one of these thermometers but I don't find them very accurate. Particularly the air temperature reading part. This reading is greatly influenced by the warm water in the aquarium. I prefer the cheaper thermometers that go in the water.

Should it go more to the top or bottom of the glass please? Thanks x

I doesn't matter were it goes but I won't get it as when I had one it didn't hold its temperature after couple of weeks

How does it work does some part go into the tank

It sticks on to the side of the tank. There is a sensore on it and it is fairly accurate,I have one on each of my tanks.

Does this thermometer have a alarm to alert when the temperature goes above a certain temperature or below a certain temperature? any ideas which do?
