This is a cracking cat flap. As the chipped monsters (sorry, the chipped kittens) grew and became ready for outside, it was clear that we'd want some control of what they did (ie when they could come/go), and more importantly, how we were going to keep the several other cats (a couple of which are curious nosy and bulshy little fellas) out of house. Lots of review reading (mainly on here against other products) later and this was the choice - and I do not regret it. The boys didn't take long to get the hang of it - one is one of those curious nosy bulshy types I mentioned above - so much so that he does this hilarious Superman dive through it even time he goes out. Our other one is a little neurotic (the wife says sensible, but meh) and much more nervous reserved and careful so it took him a bit longer. The manual says tempt with ham/meat/etc - heck just rattle the cat treats on the other side of the door with it propped slightly open, he'll soon get the jist. Mr Neurotic our end had a slow start but realised he had to man up if he didn't want to miss out on the adventure outside. Folks do say some folks get a bit scared by the clicking. Again if your cat is a bit sensitive this maybe the case at first but persevere. They do realise in the end that actually to come in that the click is a good thing and means they can come in. I was a bit worried about the draft initally, and whilst there is a very small one despite the furry flap edges in the frame, it's not that bad. That said my flap is installed 90 degrees from the direction of wind - the wind cannot hit it straight on and it does look like you can kinda see between the flap edge and furry insulation and the outside world, so this might be a problem for others. The other thing to note (that doesn't bother us due to the location) is it looks OK and not too bulky from the inside (which is the side you can see in the main picture here on Amazon), but some my find it pig ugly on the outside due to the surround over the sensors - it does stick out a good couple of inches. This is a practical element for the cat flap, but yeah, if the cat flap is in a prominent location and you want a discreet cat flap, again please consider carefully. So far in the past 2.5 months the sensors haven't become that blocked. Unlike the state of the rest of the cat flap, with its mud and leaves dragged in by the monsters, so whilst I've had to clean the cat flap, the sensors haven't been affected. Range on the sensors is good and we've had no problems so far. I leave the cat flap set so that they can ALWAYS get in (even when locked in, just in case they do one day break out when they shouldn't) and we've had some noses up against the flap trying to get in, but as expected, no unwanted visitors. The only way such an unwanted visitor can get in, is if (s)he tailgates your own cat in, and that isn't going to happen unless they're friends and your cat is trying to have an unauthorised party whilst you're out (who needs teenagers?) Lastly, our cats are not allowed out yet after dark. We're both long day workers spread over the 7 days, so some days neither one of us in until a few hours after sunset. We get some help from the neighbours and family if we know we're going to be late (don't worry, they're not neglected when we're gone, they get plenty of visitors and love!), however I do wonder if I should've looked for a chip cat flap with timer. That's not a limitation of this cat flap, this does more than I expected better tahn I expected - but if you are reading this, do consider when your cat(s) is allowed out, and if you're around to lock 'em in. For what I wanted tho, great cat flap and so far so good. If we do have a disaster I'll update this, but I don't think I'll need to. Anyway, too much chat, hope this helps folks, I'll shut up now.

I’m so impressed with this catflap – it’s fantastic. It was easy to fit and it works beautifully. My first catflap was magnetic and initially it was marvellous until eventually every cat in the neighbourhood had a magnetic mouse attached to their collar. Then I had various cats letting themselves in and eating my cats’ food and causing various problems. I then looked at catflaps again but couldn’t afford a microchip scanner version because they were over hundred pounds which was way out of my budget. So I upgraded to an infra-red catflap. My cats wore fairly big infra-red microchip dangles on their collars but the running costs were quite high. I needed to buy button batteries for the devices and the devices themselves didn’t last that long either. My ladies were very active and the dangles became scratched up and so needed replacing. Also, if they got wet they’d stop working. So I had a store of dangles, AA batteries and button batteries. I developed a technique of wrapping the workings in cling film before putting in the dangle and so they lasted a bit longer. In time, one of my ladies died, and the infra-red catflap stopped working - it was impossible to programme it to accept the infra-red dangles. The guarantee had expired and I was back to the local cats letting themselves in, eating food and sometimes spraying. Now that a microchip scanner catflap is a more realistic £65, I thought I’d give it a go. I programmed the flap whilst my cat was relaxing on the sofa. She wasn’t impressed that I was wafting the flap around her head but it worked. (The printed instructions say that no amount of wafting will programme the flap, but I managed it). The flap itself is the perfect size, so it was just a matter of unscrewing the old one and installing the new one in its place. The hole matched up perfectly with no drilling or cutting. When my cat used it for the first time, it opened for her straightaway and then locked immediately. No other cats have been able to gain access to our house. This flap is clear plastic and she can look out to see if it’s safe before going out. We’re very happy with this catflap and I wish I’d been able to buy one years ago.

Update October 2011: Have had this a few months now, and would still give it 5 stars. It has been absolutely faultless in operation, and have not had one unwanted cat in my house. In short, a bit pricy but alot of thought has gone into this product, it is easy to use, works well on batteries; I don't think you will get anything much better than this. I seem to have the most recent version which is in answer to complaints about the previous model, so this version has a brush round the edges of the flap itself to minimise draughts, although there is still a small gap at the top but this is to allow the flap to swing; the flap also locates very positively in the centre (closed) position and the catch closes straight after my cat has gone through, in answer to complaints that there was too much delay with the previous model. It is my first cat flap for my first cat. Worried about other cats entering the home through more conventional flaps, and I didn't want any cumbersome magnets or whatever on her collar, I decided to get the most hi tech one. I had her microchipped first then ordered the flap which arrived very quickly. Before fitting it in the door I made sure it would respond to her chip, which it does very easily. It's dead easy to program; you simply put it into 'learn mode' which means you just press a button in the battery compartment, and it will memorise the chip of the first cat which goes though the flap, it then goes straight into normal operating mode. For your other cats you simply repeat the process. It is not possible for someone to press this learn button by mistake thus allowing foreign cats to get in, because the button is hidden under the cover of the battery compartment in normal use. There are only a couple of circumstances in which an unwanted cat may get in: 1) If the unwanted cat is chasing your cat and tail gates it through the flap; 2) If your cat is inside looking out and sticks its head right up to the flap, the catch operates; at this moment another cat may be able to get in; hopefully these two circumstances would be very rare, and I don't see how this could be improved. In addition there is a manual overide control, which is simply a knob which you rotate to set the flap for in only, out only, or completely locked. A great product which works well, and I can't see how it could be improved. I don't think you will be disappointed if you buy this.

I ordered this as we were going on holiday and I was worried about the cat wanting to get in and out of the house when it pleased. I had doubts that the cat would understand what to do, but (with a little dab of butter to tempt it ) it soon mastered it! The click it makes when the cat goes near did make him nervous to begin with, but he soon got used to it. Easy to program and set up. Would definitely recommend.

Due to the fantastic customer service I've received from Sureflap I feel it's only fair to review and let others know my very positive experience with Sureflap. We had quite a few problems trying to coax our cat to go through the new Sureflap, it took weeks but to be fair to Sureflap our cat, although 4 years old, is tiny and very nervous type so any kind of change just throws her into a wobbly! And she refuses to do anything. Weeks went by with it just in swing flap mode (no batteries) and it took weeks just to encourage her to go through it (and yes that included all sorts of fishy tasty bribes to no avail)!! Once she started going through (hallelujah!) we put the batteries in and put on Learning Mode. Of course, even the red flashing light knocked her confidence again, so back to square one with the fishy tasty bribes ... eventually she jumped through again to go outside and it seemed to me it had read her chip as the red light stopped flashing and the grey button went 'up' . Great. Except not. When she tried to come back in for some reason it was not reading her chip so although I could see her struggling to get in, the catch was not opening. At this point she lost all confidence and we were back to square one again as she refused to try again. Well she eventually did try again it had the same results. We reset the flap back to factory setting incase we had messed up, but still it would not read her chip. I contact Sureflap and explained. From the word go they were extremely curtious, polite and took our situation seriously. They immediately (it arrived the next day) sent me a 'tester' kit, which is to test and make sure the Sureflap can read a microchip. We tested their microchip which was easy to do, so when we pushed the tester through from the outside, the flap door opened every time. Clearly the Sureflap was not faulty as it could read this microchip every time. They asked me to let them know asap which I did. The person I spoke to said he would pass on this info to 'Head Office' and they would be in touch. I thought, oh here we go 'Head Office' I'll never hear from them again. Couldn't have been more wrong. Charlotte phoned me from Head Office the next day and was absolutely amazing and really wanted to help with this situation and get it resolved. It felt to me very genuine and I was very grateful as I did not want to end up with a 70 pound cat flap that was no more use to me than the £7.99 swing ones (which is what we had). Plus, I really wanted this to work to alleviate the problems we were having with neighbourhood cats coming in. It had been suggested to me that I take Lola to the vet to make sure that her chip had not dislodged hence the reason why it was not being read. This I done and was assured that her chip was were it should be, i.e. between her shoulder blades. Again, Charlotte asked that I get back to her as soon as I could to let her know. I did. It was all a bit baffling but she suggested that in very rare cases for some reason certain batches of microchips do fail. She asked how I felt about re chipping Lola if she sent the chip to me? I did not have a problem with this so long as it worked! Once again, the next day I received Lola's new chip and took it to my vet. This took about 3 mins. That night, my cat went out and I couldn't believe my eyes when she came back IN !!! We're now a couple of weeks on and I can't remember it being any different !! It definitly works. The Customer Care team are A* and it's such peace of mind going away for weekends etc knowing that my neighbour is feeding MY cat and not someone else's ! Lola is also much happier as she had spent the last year hissing and tail swishing every morning due to 'intruders'. I can't recommend this product highly enough nor the customer care team. I can confidently say that should you be unlucky and I do believe ours to be quite a rare situation, but should similar happen to you my experience tells me that Sureflap will do everything it can to resolve and although we didn't quite touch on it, I wouldn't be suprised if all else genuinly failed they would've refunded me. Go ahead and buy it's worth every penny. A*

This cat flap has been brilliant. It was easy to programme to my cat’s microchip and worked straight away. Best of all, it keeps the neighbourhood cats out while still letting my own cat come and go freely. The flap is quiet, reliable and gives real peace of mind knowing only the right cat can get in. It’s definitely one of those products that’s worth paying a little extra for. Highly recommended!

My large cat has been using this cat flap for 14 years...we have certainly had our monies worth. Finally it sadly started losing bits and gave up.. I bought a new one and it fitted perfectly into the space..what a relief that something worked first time! So having been very impressed with the first one I have high hopes for the second...so far all is good!

Because for you, you will be awoken at hourly intervals to your cat trying to head-butt his way through the inoperable plastic gateway which serves not as a gateway, but a barrier to your feline overlord entering his dominion. You may as well have saved your £60 and endured the incessant miaows at the window, or the desperate squeak of paws at the glass, wax-on wax-off fashion, attracting your attention to his plight of being outside. "You've just been unlucky enough to receive a faulty product", I hear you say. And yes, that was my initial reaction too. On contacting the customer service desk, you will be politely provided with an assortment of top tips, to get the best out of your 'SureFlap Cat Flap with Microchip Identification, White, 21 x 21 cm’. Adjust the screws, for fixing them too tight can be the cause of this problem. Still seeing no improvement? Try cleaning the battery contacts - poor connections can impede operation. (On an item less than nine months old, this all seems unlikely, but you don’t want to cause undue hassle. You willingly oblige.) When this fails, you are asked what batteries you are using, because of course, you were informed that only premium batteries work with their product... No recollection of this requirement on purchase? No, me neither. But this is an irrelevance, as everyone knows the old adage, 'you buy it cheap, you buy it twice'. (SureFlap being the exception). You cat will suffer significant distress. Imagine the thoughts of your disapproving companion, when he fears he’s been locked out for good. For you, there will be months of domestic disharmony, as you succumb to middle of the night arguments as to whose turn it is to allow the blighter in, repeating the whole process an hour later, when it's clear he returned solely to stock up on Whisk-as Tasty Pockets, before making the arduous journey back to the neighbour's garden to evacuate his bowels. My main criticism of the 'SureFlap Cat Flap with Microchip Identification, White, 21 x 21 cm' is that it fails in its primary function of being a cat flap - allowing a cat in and out of your home, without involving you in the process. **** UPDATE: A replacement was finally offered which has been working without issue for almost 2 months now. ****

Just a little too small for my cat and I stool haven’t used the cup reader

I just installed this flap today after having problems with next door's cat coming into the house to eat. This wouldn't have been an enormous issue (he does no damage and my cat gets along with him) except that he has a long running feud with the local bully, a black cat who attacks all the other cats in the area. Last night was the final straw when they evidently were both in my kitchen yowling at one another! This freaked my cat out so I decided enough was enough and went out to get a file to make the existing hole fractionally bigger so I could install this flap which arrived a week or so ago. That was no problem, I enlarged the hole and slipped the SureFlap in place. Within a few minutes, the interloper was trying to get in, to no avail. I programmed my cat into it without any difficulty, her chip is right between her shoulder blades. But getting her to use it... there's another thing! I went outside and lured her out. It took a while but eventually she figured out that she had to push it with a paw and not just her nose. However... going back in. So far she still hasn't done it. Once outside she sniffed about then took a look at the new door. It was very sunny and the plastic is highly reflective. She saw herself in the door, thought it was a strange cat inside her house and freaked out. She puffed up to twice her normal size and shot off around the side of the house. It was very funny but obviously I had to solve that. So I got some mud and smeared it on the outside of the flap so that it wasn't as reflective as it used to be. You can still just about see out of it if you're inside, but on the outside unless the light is on indoors you can't really see through it any more. She then was happily sticking her head in the tunnel and you could hear it click quietly which makes her start just a little. I'm hopeful that she'll get used to it quickly because I can't be having the big bully coming into the house tearing her to pieces. My main concern right now is that she is used to hurtling through the door when she runs away from him. (Until last night he didn't seem to have any notion that he could come in but now he's seen the other male do it I think he figured it out.) I don't know if it will react fast enough and open the flap without her smacking into it. It may put her off of using it altogether. I'll report back on progress in a while. Jan 9, 2012 A month has now gone by since my cat began using this new flap. It took her a couple of days to start using it to enter the house. I ended up having to cover the inside and outside of the flap in white Scotch tape so she couldn't see her own reflection (but you can see kinda see through it). That was freaking her out a bit so perhaps something for SureFlap to consider in future. Maybe offer an opaque door flap as an option. On the whole though this door has been a life saver. It stopped the other cats from entering - maybe he's brighter than your average kitty but the main offender learned almost immediately that he could no longer get in that way and stopped trying. The only problem, if you can call it that, is that my cat can no longer hurtle through the door, it just doesn't react that fast. But she's learned that and doesn't try to enter it at a run. I worry a little that she may get caught by the big bully cat who occasionally chases her but so far that hasn't been the case. My only other concern and perhaps someone can inform me - does it give you any warning when the batteries are about to die or do I need to test them periodically to see how long they're likely to last? March 10, 2012 There's a slight flaw in this door but I guess not likely to affect most users. My cat is constantly being chased by her enemy, the female cat who lives next door. One day recently she was in hot pursuit and when Mizz came through the door she was so close behind that she was simply able to follow her in because the door hadn't yet shut. This can't be called a design flaw, it's more to do with the nasty character of the cat next door but if you're thinking that it's completely fool proof, it's not. As luck would have it, my husband and I were both in the kitchen when this happened so no fight ensued. The interloper was terrified to find herself in this strange situation and being unfamiliar with cat doors she didn't simply turn around and go back out, instead running off into the house. Hopefully the experience scared her sufficiently that she won't do it again! Regarding the batteries, I tested them and three months after installation they're still almost at max strength so they're going to last a long time. Overall I highly recommend this product; it's miles better than the ones that rely on a collar tag, the microchip isn't going to get lost!
