This cat flap has been brilliant. It was easy to programme to my cat’s microchip and worked straight away. Best of all, it keeps the neighbourhood cats out while still letting my own cat come and go freely. The flap is quiet, reliable and gives real peace of mind knowing only the right cat can get in. It’s definitely one of those products that’s worth paying a little extra for. Highly recommended!

I have to say that this cat flap is fantastic. Great quality build and the design is first rate. Simple to install and just as simple to program to my cats microchip. I was a bit worried because the vet, who should've gone to Specsavers, couldn't get the chip in my poor cat in the right place. It ended up off center of the back of his neck but there's no need to worry as the Sureflap just detected it faultlessly and continues to do so. The only problem now is trying to get the furry little bugger to use it . . . he's a little dense and it looks like patience, many treats and encouragement will be required. I couldn't recommend this highly enough though, it works flawlessly and was extremely easy to program (do this first!) then install. If my cat is too thick to ever use it it'll be a highly decorative piece of door furniture. Hey hoUpdate: Within a couple of days of having the Sureflap installed we've managed to get our moggie to start using it. Extensive bribery with treats works wonders. Take a look at the many YouTube videos for ideas on getting your cat to use it. Of interest, one technique is to tape the flap open permanently so the cat doesn't have to push the flap in the early stages. This worked wonders and he was able to find his way back into the house in no time. Unfortunately, traveling the other way is still a mystery to him but I'm sure we'll get there . . . Anyway, during this 'taped up' experiment we found one of the neighbours bigger Toms showing interest. Not long later and the big boy had become an intruder!I'm now so pleased I paid the extra for this item rather than a bog standard cat flap. Locking out the neighbours cats is fantastic and will make our cats life easier and stress free. He's lovely, just wish he wasn't so denseFurther Update: After some hesitation our furry family member is now using this cat flap freely, both to go out and come back in. I've lost count of the number of times the neighboring cats have tried and been denied access. The main offender has now completely given up even trying! It's hard to convey just how much of an improvement to our home life this device is. No more having to open the door every time he wants go out or come in, no more having to worry about invaders nicking his biscuits. This is one of the best buys we've made and I seriously can't recommend it highly enoughFurther Further update: Got a cat? Just get one! After a few weeks our furry friend now uses this constantly and the days of having to get up to open doors through constant meowing are gone. Seriously, this is such an improvement in quality of life, particularly with a moggy who changes his mind every 5 minutes. Of course, the major advantage with Sureflap is the microchip and as I've commented before this works like a dream. The other older local bully cats no longer even bother trying the flap, they did so many times but never once got in. This is just a superb device and I can't imagine being without it now. I couldn't rate this highly enough. Quality construction, excellent instructions, even a selection of screw sizes for different doors. Wonderful

My large cat has been using this cat flap for 14 years...we have certainly had our monies worth.Finally it sadly started losing bits and gave up..I bought a new one and it fitted perfectly into the space..what a relief that something worked first time!So having been very impressed with the first one I have high hopes for the second...so far all is good!

Works well and feels good quality. The microchip recognition is quick and it’s kept unwanted cats out. Fitting it was a little fiddly, which is why I’ve given it four stars, but once installed it’s been spot on

This is a cracking cat flap. As the chipped monsters (sorry, the chipped kittens) grew and became ready for outside, it was clear that we'd want some control of what they did (ie when they could come/go), and more importantly, how we were going to keep the several other cats (a couple of which are curious nosy and bulshy little fellas) out of house.Lots of review reading (mainly on here against other products) later and this was the choice - and I do not regret it.The boys didn't take long to get the hang of it - one is one of those curious nosy bulshy types I mentioned above - so much so that he does this hilarious Superman dive through it even time he goes out. Our other one is a little neurotic (the wife says sensible, but meh) and much more nervous reserved and careful so it took him a bit longer. The manual says tempt with ham/meat/etc - heck just rattle the cat treats on the other side of the door with it propped slightly open, he'll soon get the jist. Mr Neurotic our end had a slow start but realised he had to man up if he didn't want to miss out on the adventure outside.Folks do say some folks get a bit scared by the clicking. Again if your cat is a bit sensitive this maybe the case at first but persevere. They do realise in the end that actually to come in that the click is a good thing and means they can come in.I was a bit worried about the draft initally, and whilst there is a very small one despite the furry flap edges in the frame, it's not that bad. That said my flap is installed 90 degrees from the direction of wind - the wind cannot hit it straight on and it does look like you can kinda see between the flap edge and furry insulation and the outside world, so this might be a problem for others.The other thing to note (that doesn't bother us due to the location) is it looks OK and not too bulky from the inside (which is the side you can see in the main picture here on Amazon), but some my find it pig ugly on the outside due to the surround over the sensors - it does stick out a good couple of inches. This is a practical element for the cat flap, but yeah, if the cat flap is in a prominent location and you want a discreet cat flap, again please consider carefully.So far in the past 2.5 months the sensors haven't become that blocked. Unlike the state of the rest of the cat flap, with its mud and leaves dragged in by the monsters, so whilst I've had to clean the cat flap, the sensors haven't been affected. Range on the sensors is good and we've had no problems so far. I leave the cat flap set so that they can ALWAYS get in (even when locked in, just in case they do one day break out when they shouldn't) and we've had some noses up against the flap trying to get in, but as expected, no unwanted visitors. The only way such an unwanted visitor can get in, is if (s)he tailgates your own cat in, and that isn't going to happen unless they're friends and your cat is trying to have an unauthorised party whilst you're out (who needs teenagers?)Lastly, our cats are not allowed out yet after dark. We're both long day workers spread over the 7 days, so some days neither one of us in until a few hours after sunset. We get some help from the neighbours and family if we know we're going to be late (don't worry, they're not neglected when we're gone, they get plenty of visitors and love!), however I do wonder if I should've looked for a chip cat flap with timer. That's not a limitation of this cat flap, this does more than I expected better tahn I expected - but if you are reading this, do consider when your cat(s) is allowed out, and if you're around to lock 'em in.For what I wanted tho, great cat flap and so far so good. If we do have a disaster I'll update this, but I don't think I'll need to. Anyway, too much chat, hope this helps folks, I'll shut up now.

Update October 2011: Have had this a few months now, and would still give it 5 stars. It has been absolutely faultless in operation, and have not had one unwanted cat in my house.In short, a bit pricy but alot of thought has gone into this product, it is easy to use, works well on batteries; I don't think you will get anything much better than this. I seem to have the most recent version which is in answer to complaints about the previous model, so this version has a brush round the edges of the flap itself to minimise draughts, although there is still a small gap at the top but this is to allow the flap to swing; the flap also locates very positively in the centre (closed) position and the catch closes straight after my cat has gone through, in answer to complaints that there was too much delay with the previous model. It is my first cat flap for my first cat. Worried about other cats entering the home through more conventional flaps, and I didn't want any cumbersome magnets or whatever on her collar, I decided to get the most hi tech one. I had her microchipped first then ordered the flap which arrived very quickly. Before fitting it in the door I made sure it would respond to her chip, which it does very easily. It's dead easy to program; you simply put it into 'learn mode' which means you just press a button in the battery compartment, and it will memorise the chip of the first cat which goes though the flap, it then goes straight into normal operating mode. For your other cats you simply repeat the process. It is not possible for someone to press this learn button by mistake thus allowing foreign cats to get in, because the button is hidden under the cover of the battery compartment in normal use. There are only a couple of circumstances in which an unwanted cat may get in: 1) If the unwanted cat is chasing your cat and tail gates it through the flap; 2) If your cat is inside looking out and sticks its head right up to the flap, the catch operates; at this moment another cat may be able to get in; hopefully these two circumstances would be very rare, and I don't see how this could be improved. In addition there is a manual overide control, which is simply a knob which you rotate to set the flap for in only, out only, or completely locked. A great product which works well, and I can't see how it could be improved. I don't think you will be disappointed if you buy this.

I was very dubious about buying a microchip cat flap as I had heard that they didn't work very well and that the cat had to put her head in exactly the right place for it to open. We already had a catmate cat flap but were getting a lot of unwanted cats coming in which was stressing out our cat. We ended up locking it so no cats could come in - our cat could go out but had to scratch on the door or window to be let back in. However we had to leave it open if we went out and often found a different cat inside on our return.However this microchip cat flap has proved a godsend. It was very easy to install in the hole cut out for our previous cat flap. However you do need an adaptor which is sold separately. Then it was a simple case of putting in 2 screws. The cat flap comes with 3 sets of different length screws so you can choose the right length for your door. It does help to have 2 people so one can hold the cat flap in place inside the door while the other puts in the screws from outside. We are hopeless at DIY and I did get a quote of £30 for someone to come and fit it for us but it turned out to be easy to do ourselves!I registered our cat's microchip before installing the cat flap and while she was relaxed on the sofa. I put a few treats inside it and put it by her on the sofa, after pressing the button to register a chip which is inside the battery compartment. She was happy to put her head in and take the treats and the clicking didn't bother her. After installing the cat flap we had to encourage her how to use it, especially as she was used to it being locked when were were in. The clicking did make her jump away at first but with some more encouragement she tried again. After showing her twice she got the hang of it. There is a bit of a tunnel to go through and we put a shallow step by the back door to make it easier for her to get through. She is quite an old cat - we have had her for 15 years and she was a stray so is anywhere between 16 and 19 years old.The cat flap is a bit smaller than our previous one and would probably not suit a big cat - ours is about 4kg.I do not normally write reviews but was grateful for the comments left by other people which encouraged me to buy this. We now have a much happier cat . The other cats seems very bemused that she can get in but they can't!!

Just a little too small for my cat and I stool haven’t used the cup reader

I just installed this flap today after having problems with next door's cat coming into the house to eat. This wouldn't have been an enormous issue (he does no damage and my cat gets along with him) except that he has a long running feud with the local bully, a black cat who attacks all the other cats in the area. Last night was the final straw when they evidently were both in my kitchen yowling at one another! This freaked my cat out so I decided enough was enough and went out to get a file to make the existing hole fractionally bigger so I could install this flap which arrived a week or so ago. That was no problem, I enlarged the hole and slipped the SureFlap in place. Within a few minutes, the interloper was trying to get in, to no avail.I programmed my cat into it without any difficulty, her chip is right between her shoulder blades. But getting her to use it... there's another thing! I went outside and lured her out. It took a while but eventually she figured out that she had to push it with a paw and not just her nose. However... going back in. So far she still hasn't done it. Once outside she sniffed about then took a look at the new door. It was very sunny and the plastic is highly reflective. She saw herself in the door, thought it was a strange cat inside her house and freaked out. She puffed up to twice her normal size and shot off around the side of the house. It was very funny but obviously I had to solve that. So I got some mud and smeared it on the outside of the flap so that it wasn't as reflective as it used to be. You can still just about see out of it if you're inside, but on the outside unless the light is on indoors you can't really see through it any more. She then was happily sticking her head in the tunnel and you could hear it click quietly which makes her start just a little. I'm hopeful that she'll get used to it quickly because I can't be having the big bully coming into the house tearing her to pieces. My main concern right now is that she is used to hurtling through the door when she runs away from him. (Until last night he didn't seem to have any notion that he could come in but now he's seen the other male do it I think he figured it out.) I don't know if it will react fast enough and open the flap without her smacking into it. It may put her off of using it altogether. I'll report back on progress in a while.Jan 9, 2012A month has now gone by since my cat began using this new flap. It took her a couple of days to start using it to enter the house. I ended up having to cover the inside and outside of the flap in white Scotch tape so she couldn't see her own reflection (but you can see kinda see through it). That was freaking her out a bit so perhaps something for SureFlap to consider in future. Maybe offer an opaque door flap as an option. On the whole though this door has been a life saver. It stopped the other cats from entering - maybe he's brighter than your average kitty but the main offender learned almost immediately that he could no longer get in that way and stopped trying. The only problem, if you can call it that, is that my cat can no longer hurtle through the door, it just doesn't react that fast. But she's learned that and doesn't try to enter it at a run. I worry a little that she may get caught by the big bully cat who occasionally chases her but so far that hasn't been the case. My only other concern and perhaps someone can inform me - does it give you any warning when the batteries are about to die or do I need to test them periodically to see how long they're likely to last?March 10, 2012There's a slight flaw in this door but I guess not likely to affect most users. My cat is constantly being chased by her enemy, the female cat who lives next door. One day recently she was in hot pursuit and when Mizz came through the door she was so close behind that she was simply able to follow her in because the door hadn't yet shut. This can't be called a design flaw, it's more to do with the nasty character of the cat next door but if you're thinking that it's completely fool proof, it's not. As luck would have it, my husband and I were both in the kitchen when this happened so no fight ensued. The interloper was terrified to find herself in this strange situation and being unfamiliar with cat doors she didn't simply turn around and go back out, instead running off into the house. Hopefully the experience scared her sufficiently that she won't do it again! Regarding the batteries, I tested them and three months after installation they're still almost at max strength so they're going to last a long time.Overall I highly recommend this product; it's miles better than the ones that rely on a collar tag, the microchip isn't going to get lost!
