I use shimano R50 shoes for exactly what you want to do works perfectly. MTB shoes normally only come with 2 holes road shoes normally the 3 hole set up, just check compatabilty first. I have them on three bikes. They're not too heavy, are well made and last ages. I find that there's plenty of lateral movement for my feet and as they're double sided they are easy to clip in and out of. No exceptions. They work reliably well and have bearings that seem to go on forever (caveat: I don't ride much off-road). They're very easy to setup and adjust and very forgiving for beginners (I was one once and never came off because I couldn't unclip in time). Given the entry-level price I find these to be well engineered and great value for money.
