I cannot recommend this book enough if you are a beginner looking for an introduction to what is a complex subject. It covers all the major areas, major artists and styles. I love this book.Be aware, if your interest is in modern art (suprematism, surrealism, de stijl, constructivism) is covered in much less depth than other periods such as renaissance, baroque, byzantine etc.Overall I cannot recommend this enough, even the barer chapters give you a fantastic overview.

I bought this book as I didn't know much about Art and it really helped me ! Written in the traditional Dummies style, it is entertaining to read. However, there is only a limited number of colour photographs, which is a bit disappointing for an Art book. But i guess it is to keep the costs down !

I bought this as I am doing an Art History degree, and thought it would be a useful book to have - but not sure that it will be much help as it is just skims the surface of the subject - better for casual reading than for study I would say. It is laid out in the 'Dummies' usual easy style and you can dip into any page and not feel out of your depth, which is what it is for really. I will keep it on my shelf in case I get a mental block about something, so not disappointed as for the price it is good value.

If you are British or Irish this book overlooks your country's existence and its contribution to history of art. The only reference to Britain is the British Museum and the assertion that its contents were all stolen from other countries.The book contains some interesting facts but I can't help but get irritated by it every time I pick it up.

Art History For Dummies is a fantastic book for anybody who want's to learn more about this subject.From Prehistoric Art to Modern Art and everything in between this book is both thorough and interesting.The book is squarely aimed at a novice to the subject and is easy to understand with dashes of humour along the way. It also has within the middle of the book a full colour section with photographs of the Artwork mentioned in the book.For anyone with an appreciation for Art this book is a must buy and although not a deep, scholarly read I think it is a must read.

A useful contribution to my art books. My grandchildren love it.

A bit tongue in cheek and the puns can be a tad tedious but it is a 'for dummies' book so you have to accept that's their style. However, for an overview of art history, even starting with zero knowledge, it's good.
