Will this work with a z170 motherboard without a bios update?

No - I bought a Z170 board and had to update the BIOS to support this processor. You'll want a Z270 board if you want it to support this without an update, or look for a Z170 board with "Q-Flash Plus" which allows you to update the BIOS with a USB flash-drive even if you have no CPU installed. This way you can update the BIOS to the latest version without needing a placeholder CPU.

Will this work with my msi z170a gaming pro carbon

They both use the LGA1151 socket, so yes, should work fine :)

Does it come with pre applied thermal paste

No. Some coolers come with TP already applied but in the majority of coolers you will need to apply it yourself. it generally comes with the cooler. check out thermal paste on utube.
