Review: Smoothest trackball ever - I have used Kensington trackballs for years (this optical one will be my 5th), they occupy less space than a mousepad, the mouse cable does not get pulled about and they do everything a standard two-button mouse could do, only better. The older mechanical units are fine when you first get them but as time goes by the small rubber wheels get clogged with dust and fluff, which can be cleaned off as first but in time the rubber of the wheels turns to black goo and then the whole mechanism will stop working. If the rubber wheels could have been replaced, then perhaps I would never have bought the optical unit? I expect this trackball never to wear out and therefore be my last. This optical trackball is really very much lighter to use than the mechanical ones but the mass of the ball seems about the same and I can go whizzing from one side of the screen to the other, letting the trackball do all the work. It is equally useable with the left hand as well as the right and always being in the same position on the desktop, it makes for a strainfree existence. Worth the money? Absolutely, I would recommend this device anytime. If it was wireless it would be even better.
Review: Excellent piece of kit. - I originally bought a Trackball for my Mother as, after breaking her wrist in a fall, she developed Arthritis in her wrist and found using a normal Mouse not only difficult to operate but caused a great deal of pain after a short while. The Trackball meant that she could rest her arm comfortably on the desk with her wrist supported, and mainly operate her computer using just her index finger to move the Ball and left thumb to left click with, (right click was usually her third finger right hand). The Ball is easy to control and moves very easily when just flicked across as one does with a moblie phone screen. The only downside is that it does not have a scroll wheel so you have to use the scroll bar on the side of the screen to scroll up or down, ie left button press and hold down, then use ball to scroll up or down. I have found that leaving a normal 'wheel mouse' connected for these occasions is the answer. Overall, having bought one for myself as well, I find the Trackball easy to use and it is much kinder to ones wrist especially when having to use the computer for any length of time.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is there a way to use top right button & bottom left together (& vise-versa) to make a new command for the Kensington Expert Mouse?**
A: You must install the Trackball software, which starts every time you reboot. it's a free download from Kensington's web site. With that you can define a function when you click both buttons together, and also define what each button does on its own.

**Q: Does it have Windows 8 (specifically 8.1) support?**
A: It works fine with my 8.1 x64 install

**Q: Are these easier on the wrists considering that the pictures show hands in the horizontal position, which is usually bad for your wrists.**
A: I've been using a variety of trackballs (finger operated not thumb-balls) for months now and I can't go back to using a mouse. i've had literally zero wristproblems since switching for everything (even gaming) and whenever I'm forced to use a mouse even for a short time now I am quickly reminded of my arm / wrist aches again.

**Q: can it click lock**
A: yes use windows mouse settings

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent piece of kit.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great tracking, but sorely misses a scroll wheel!
*by B***Y on 15 May 2026*

I picked up the Kensington Orbit Wired Trackball to help with some wrist strain, and overall, it’s a really solid, comfortable device. The ambidextrous design is great, and it feels high-quality on my desk. Here is my honest breakdown after spending some time with it: The Tracking: Out of the box, this thing is *fast*. The tracking sensitivity was so high that the cursor was flying across my screen at the slightest touch. I had to go into my system settings and significantly reduce the pointer speed to get it under control. Once adjusted, it works perfectly and is incredibly precise, but be prepared to tweak your settings on day one. The Ergonomics: As someone looking for an ergonomic alternative to a standard mouse, this delivers. It keeps your hand stationary and reduces wrist movement, which is exactly what I wanted. The Downside (No Scroll): The biggest adjustment for me—and the reason it loses a star—is the complete lack of a scrolling mechanism. I am so used to a traditional scroll wheel, and having absolutely nothing on this trackball to scroll through long webpages or documents is a bummer. You have to rely on clicking and dragging scroll bars or using keyboard shortcuts. Final Verdict: It gets **4 stars** from me. It’s a well-built, comfortable trackball that functions exactly as it should once you turn down the sensitivity. If you don't mind navigating without a scroll wheel, it's a fantastic buy!
