Is it posssible to do free hand embroidery on a darning setting on this model

Yes you can do free-motion stitching on this model. You will need to buy a compatible free-motion stitching/embroidery foot, as it is not included; these sell for £4-12, I prefer the all metal ones. You will also need to use the plastic plate (provided) to cover the feed dogs (the part of the machine that feeds the fabric through). In more expensive models there is an option to drop the feed dogs so they are out of the way. The plastic plate stays in place well; it sticks up a little but I have not found this to be an issue.

Is this model quite lightweight

Reasonably...however if too lightweight- flimsy. This is Japan made, not Chinese.

Does it have a walking foot so that it can be used for quilting?

No you have to buy one separately .... It is a brilliant machine

is this good for curtain making?

My wife says so as she's made several pairs of curtains including 3 width pairs with a 72inch drop (a bit technical for me!) She says it coped very well.
