UE4 book for people who don't know UE4, but really know 3D professionally
I have to preface this by saying I'm only about 1/3 in. That said, this is simply the best book on UE4 I've read, and I've at least skimmed them all. The reason is that it's perhaps the only one written for people who actually have things to do and other things to do with their lives. That is, the author assumes you're not an idiot, and there are no endless pages wasted explaining why a file system is important. It gets to the point: making an environment that looks good and is navigable, and does so succinctly and with a great deal of elegance and thought. For every ten pages of blather that other books bulk out with explaining what you can pick up from the first three Epic/Unreal videos on YouTube, this book efficiently explains some tricky thing having to do with the interpretation of normal maps that you'd waste hours on the question boards with. Well-written, clear, concise, VERY helpful.

It's OK
A common issue with technical authors is the curse of knowledge. It makes it hard for them to remember just how much prior knowledge they draw on when explaining things. What ends up in the book can be a mix of cogent information and a muddled glossing over information they've take for granted. Sometimes the most important information is the info taken for granted, which can also be the hardest to remember. If you already know C++, 3D modeling, animating, 3D coordinate space, physics of light, texturing, rendering, etc, then this book can be helpful.

Not an instructional text, just an overview of the toolset.
This book is not a helpful or cost effective resource for someone that wants to actually LEARN HOW to use Unreal Engine for non-game projects. It is no more than a high level overview of some of the tools and concepts of Unreal. Zero real-world or even usable examples and very poorly printed screen shot images make this book highly overpriced imo. All the same exact info (but with better screenshots and specific solutions/methods of Unreal development) is available for FREE on Epic’s Unreal learning website. Don’t waste your time and money with this text unless you have never heard of Unreal Engine and just need an overview. Quite disappointed and returning it now.

Very useful book
Clear and detailed, this spells out a lot of the features of Unreal Engine concisely. Worth the price of admission. I found the lighting and materials chapters for architectural visualization the most useful.

Hilft mir sehr
Ich bin über 60 und wollte es nun mit der Unreal Engine 4 nochmals wissen, nachdem ich in den 80er und 90er-Jahren viel auf Commodore Amiga programmiert und gerendert hatte. Das Buch ist leicht zu lesen und farbig reich bebildert. Es ist Up to Date bis Version 16 von UE4 (zum Zeitpunkt dieser Rezension ist Version 18.4 aktuell). Über den Aufbau eines Lehrbuches kann man immer streiten; für mich ist er stimmig. Das E-Book habe ich noch nicht angesehen, aber es ist natürlich eine grosse Hilfe, wenn man das dicke Buch später mal gerade nicht zur Hand hat! Im Buch wird z.B. auch auf das Thema 'Multiplayer' eingegangen und zwar nicht nur UE4-spezifisch. Ich denke ein Anfänger/eine Anfängerin auf UE4 wird mit diesem Buch glücklich. Die Games und Projektdateien findet man über Internet-Links und auch der YouTube-Kanal des Autors ist aufgeführt. VR nimmt rund 60 Seiten von knapp 500 Seiten ein. UE4 gehört ja mit Unity 4 zu den wenigen Engines, die sehr schnell auf den VR-Zug aufgesprungen sind und für die gängigen Brillen Support bieten.

Un gran libro
El libro esta genial para iniciarse y alcanzar un buen dominio de UE4 y versiones posteriores. Tendría la quinta estrella si el contenido a descargar para realizar y seguir los ejemplos aun estuviese disponible, pero ya no es posible conseguirlo. Por lo demas recomiento el libro.

An excellent book for the topic "design vis on UE4" but ...
An excellent book for the topic "design vis on UE4" but also a very good reference for getting someone up to speed on UE4 in general. It clearly explains some of the concepts in UE4 which I found confusing in other books & documentation. Not a book you want for game development specifically but very useful in addition to a game development book.
